American Idol Season 8, Round 1 Results Show

American Idol Season 8 gives us more choice in 2009.  We have 36, not 24, but 36 contestants to vote for.  We have more weeks to vote.  We have more performance videos to download from iTunes.  Thank you, American Idol.

One21music is covering Christian music artists competing in Season 8 of American Idol.  Last night we live blogged the performances.  Tonight we watch and report.  For me, there is not enough substance in the results show on which to comment.  We take little pleasure in making snide comments about the group performances and sharing in people’s dreams being crushed.  So we will wait and comment.

But wait, the group performance was happening as I typed the last paragraph and it was pretty good.

Tuesday night’s performance show was mostly a train wreck.  Anoop and Jackie disappointed; Tatiana was discomforting; Stephen, Casey and Stevie were train wrecks.  Alexis and Ann Marie stretched out of their zone going for Aretha standards and, unless you are a country fan, you couldn’t figure out if Brent Keith did well or not.

Two of the three Christian music artists performing last night, Michael Sarver and Ricky Braddy ( identified his gospel background with gospel group Step of Faith) did very well and Danny Gokey stole the night.

To recap my predictions from the recap post:

Top guy: Danny Gokey

Top girl: Alexis Grace

Next highest: Michael Sarver

So, now we wait and see, because as Ryan says, the votes are in.

So there was one twist in protocol that I really like.  The winner sings their song.  Here are the results

Top guy: Danny Gokey closed the show with an encore of “Hero” and it sounded like he was drained from the emotions but it was good.  They did not really say he was the highest vote getter but estimated that he received five times the next highest vote getter.  Fantastic job, Danny!

Top girlAlexis Grace performed “Never Loved a Man” again and this time, for me, she tore it up.  Finally I heard that song without hearing Aretha Franklin in my head.  Great job Alexis!

Next highest: Michael Sarver and he was flabbergasted as he dropped to his knees.  He sang “I Don’t Wanna Be” again and he certaintly enjoyed himself.  I hope we see more of his dirty soul side in March.  Congratulations, Michael!

So two of our nine Chrisitan music artists are on to the finals.

The judges did not reveal who they picked from this group for the “Wild Card” show to get a second chance at one the final three spots in the finals.  So I guess we wait until March 4th to find who is in that final chance group.

  1. Nice job predicting Michael would go through. I am glad I read your post before the show started about him turning his life to the Lord..this made me pull hard for him to get through. This season has the potential to match season 6 when it was chuck full of believers like Jordin, Chris Sligh, Phil Stacey and Melinda.

Next week will be tough for the Christians I fear. Adam has gotten a lot of air time and will be hard to get ahead of. Jasmine is also a top contender. There is another slight Christian connection next week..Jesse Langseth is the sister of blues singer and believer Jonny Lang. I think Jesse is even better than Alexis.

So the last 12 in two weeks looks like it will have Felicia, Kristen, and Scott for the Christian community to pull for.

    Keep up the good work!

Thanks for all of the commentary, Jim. It is very encouraging.

I agee that next week is going to be tough. This is probably the deepest group of the three, but who would have thought that Michael would have outperformed Anoop on Tuesday.

I looked into Jessica pretty hard to find something in her public information that indicated that she was an openly professing believer. I could not find anyhting. That doesn’t mean she is not at believer. We at One21music have no intention of judging anyone’s heart; but absent some tangible evidence that she is proclaiming her faith, we could not include her. I like her a lot and I hope she does well.

In the final twelve, I would be shocled if Scott and Kristen do not at least make it to the Wild Card show.

  3. Hi Chuck..I didn’t see any evidence that Jesse is a Christian either..I just thought it was interesting who her brother was. Did You see the thing in that other site about rickey Braddy being in a Christian group? TTYL..Jim
