American Idol Season 8 Semis- March 3rd Preview

Well this is a big week for American Idol lovers.  Not only do we have the last of the two hour semi-finalists performance shows and the third of the semi-final results show but we have the all new two hour live “Wild Card” show.  By the end of this week we will know the Final 12.

It has been a disappointing season so far.  Inexplicable song choices have led to several favorites stumbling out of the Top 12.  Anoop Dessai, Casey Carlson, Jasmine Murray, Ann Marie Boskavich and Christian music artist Matt Giraud are hoping for spots in the “Wild Card” show because they picked songs that did not show their talents.

We at One21music are hoping that Christian music artists Mishavonna Henson and Ricky Braddy get another chance.  They both were among the best performers so far this season but were hindered by a lack of visibility during the American Idol Season 8 audition and Hollywood week shows.

The good news is that three Christian artists are among the first six who have been voted into American Idol’s Final 12.  Danny Gokey excelled singing Mariah Carey’s “Hero”,  eliciting shouting, hooting standing ovations from the judges.  Worship leaders Kris Allen and Michael Sarver surprised everyone by snatching the third slot in each of the first two episodes.

We will be live blogging American Idol tonight so that we can experience the performances of Christian music artists Scott MacIntyre, Kristen McNamara and Felicia Barton.

Scott MacIntyre, 23, of Scottsdale, Arizona is known on American Idol as the blind piano player.  He is so much more.  Scott entered college at 14, graduated Arizona State University at 19 and studied music at Cambridge University on the prestigious Marshall Scholarship.  He has been profiled on CNN, Sky News Europe, USA Today, and other media as pianist, vocalist, and songwriter. He has a long list of national and international music awards.

He has independently released 6 full-length CD’s and has written in genres spanning pop, rock, punk, jazz, classical and Christian pop music.  Scott performed live at the Crystal Cathedral in California, where he was featured on “Hour of Power”, and Scottsdale Bible Church.  He has performed for years with his family Gospel quartet, The MacIntyre Family Singers.

Kristen McNamara, 23, is a singer/songwriter who grew up on the top of a mountain in Northern California.  Kristen was the crying girl in Hollywood Week’s  Team Compromise.  She certainly displayed her willingness to turn the other cheek while being berated by the chick with the red weave.  At 16, she landed a job singing for the San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants and then, at 17, she moved to Branson, MO to sing and dance two shows daily six days a week.  A year later in 2004, she moved to Nashville, TN to pursue a serious music career. She was a previous Star Search and Nashville Star contestant.

In 2006, Kristen created an organization called “L.A.U.G.H.” (Love. All. Unconditionally. Giving Hope.)  According to the website for L.A.U.G.H. ..”Kristen grew up going to Church every Sunday, learning God’s love. Kristen has spent endless time with veterans, children, homeless, and many others in need of something simple, happiness. Kristen has been a counselor teaching children about Jesus Christ since she was 13 years of age. Learning and understanding religion can scare people at times, so she wanted take her faith in God and love all people through him.”

Felicia Barton, 27, of Virgnina Beach, Virginia auditioned in Louisville, Ky singing Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On”.   Here is one of many message board posts about Felicia Barton:

“Not only is Felicia a terrific singer/entertainer, but she’s a wonderful person. Her family is close friends with my family and we have always known she could go far with her talents. For those reading this who haven’t heard her in person you should attend Freedom Fellowship on Sunday mornings at either 9:00 am or 11:00am as she is the Praise and Worship leader. This is a fantastic church!”

I loved Felicia Barton’s perplexed reaction to being told she was not in American Idol’s Final 36.  She was honestly surprised as she quietly asked the judges “really?”  at least three times.  She has not received any attention on American Idol and we would like to help her climb out of the pit of obscurity.  Watch her street jamming a little Alicia Keys.

In addition to Christian music artists performing on American Idol’s semifinal show tonight, one of Season 8′s most highly touted female performers, Lil Rounds, will sing.   We have also seen a lot of Nathanial Marshall, Kendall Beard and Junot Joyner this year.

We can only hope that these last twelve have picked great songs that highlight their strengths as performers.

Christian performers we are following on tonight’s American Idol:

  • Kristen McNamara
  • Felicia Barton
  • Scott MacIntyre

The remainder of the Final 36 on American Idol’s Season 8:

  • Arianna Ayesha Afsar
  • Jorge Nunez
  • Junot Joyner
  • Kendall Beard

We wish the best for all of them!
