Would you be interested in an artist whose first CD debuted Number 1 in her homeland of New Zealand and went 7 times platinum?  Would you be interested in an artist whose sophomore effort surpassed the artistry of her first, debuted Number One in New Zealand, went double platinum within a month of release, has been a New Zealand Top 20 album every week since its release and was named an iTunes Editors Choice for 2008.

Would you be interested if you knew that Brooke Fraser became editor of the Christian magazine Soul Purpose when she was still a teenager, that she is one of the lead vocalists for the Australian based global worship juggernaut Hillsong, that her second CD was named the 13th best faith based CD on Patrol Magazine’s Top 50 of 2008 and she was nominated for best female vocalist for this year’s Dove Awards.

If you were looking for new, exciting Christian music artists on iTunes you would not find Brooke Fraser.  She is listed in the pop category.  If you surveyed any of the Christian music publications you would not know that Brooke Fraser is one of the hottest recording artists in the world.  Brooke Fraser is a Christian music artist who is one of the most successful mainstream recording artists in the world and she has just begun.

Brooke Fraser plays a sophisticated brand of pop music.  A beautiful singer, she writes songs with gorgeous, soaring  melodies.  She is an accomplished piano and guitar player so her songs move between both instruments but she adds plenty of organic instruments around her core instruments.  Her arrangements are complex and full without being lush.

“Albertine”, the title track from her second CD,  is a good example of her music.  Brooke Fraser is the face of  World Vision in New Zealand. This is a song about her trip to Rwanda and her visit to her sponsor child in Tanzania.

Her lyrics comfortably speak of her Christian worldview and her songs are quickly becomes Christian music classics.  One of her most beloved songs is “Shadowfeet’ from her second CD Albertine.  Here are the lyrics

Walking,stumbling on these shadowfeet
Toward home,a land that i’ve never seen
I am changing: less and less asleep
Made of different stuff than when i began
And i have sensed it all along
Fast approaching is the day

When the world has fallen out from under me
I’ll be found in you, still standing
When the sky rolls up and mountains fall on their knees
When time and space are through
I’ll be found in you

There’s distraction buzzing in my head
Saying in the shadows it’s easier to stay
But I’ve heard rumours of true reality
Whispers of a well-lit way

You make all things new

When the world has fallen out from under me
I’ll be found in you, still standing
Every fear and accusation under my feet
When time and space are through
I’ll be found in you

Here she is performing that beautiful song live.

Brooke Fraser is one of the rare music artists we see who is achieving tremendous success in the mainstream music industry and is a well known and widely recorded worship leader (with Hillsong).  That is a cross over I have never seen.  She recently discussed that duality in an interview with the website “AboutChrisitianmusic.com”

MarkT: So essentially you’re a Christian who writes songs, rather than a ‘Christian Songwriter’ as such? Now some people have set ideas about what Christian music should be, its purpose, its role within the Church etc. You’re signed to Sony/BMG — a major secular record company — and have a large audience outside of the Church as well… do you find there is any sort of tension between these two particular ‘spheres’, especially when it comes to the lyrics you write?

Brooke Fraser: No, not really. To be honest I’ve never struggled with this. You can’t put what God is doing on this earth into a box… it can’t be summarized into tidy categories. Whatever God is doing through my life, it’s not just about me. There’s a stirring happening in God’s Church, through the creative arts, creative ministries and other things too… and as time moves on we get closer and closer to Jesus coming back. God has a plan for the whole earth and it involves everyone one of us doing our part — it’s not necessarily going to look like something we can easily understand on the natural. I write worship songs that are for the building up of God’s people in the Church, and I love that because I’m able to express really clearly, and declare uncompromisingly my love for Jesus. But at the same time I recognize the importance of my other songs as being like parables… taking Church to people who would never walk into a church…

Brooke Fraser is one of the rising stars on the global music scene with reason.  Her music is sophisticated and complex and yet accessible.  Brooke Fraser‘s songs are comfortable for a quiet morning with a cup of coffee or at a party.  She is in the studio working on her third CD and I predict a major worldwide explosion for this New Zealander music artist who is uncompromisingly Christian in her message.
