Weekly Update 8/28/09

Posted by ian On August - 28 - 2009

So if you don’t know what this post is about, every week I will give you guys a rundown on what is happening with The One21 Music. A few months ago, we added a bunch of features to this website, so the work that we are doing on here is not always very obvious. These end-of the-week posts are for you benefit so that you never miss ANYTHING on this site.

Remember, at any time feel free to contact us through our “Contact Us” tab there at the top of the page. If you have a suggestion for an artist we should be paying attention to, a video we should, and critique about the site itself, please hit us up.

Secondly, I want to explain something you guys may not realize. This site is hard work, Chuck and I spend close to 60 hrs a week working on this site by either writing posts, updating the pages, creating the artist bios, and that doesn’t even count the interviews, planning, and marketing things we do. This is not a complaint, but realize that we see this as our calling, and we will continue to work as hard as we can for you. One way you can really help us out is by buying music through us. No, we aren’t selling it directly, but all over the website there are iTunes and Amazon links. If you are thinking about buying a new CD that we suggest to you, please consider clicking through from our site, we get a commission on anything you buy after you click through, and every little bit helps. Hopefully this convenient for you, and will help us be able to do this website for a long time.

Ok, now on to the updates:

General Site Updates

-You may notice that a Music A-Z tab has appeared at the top of the website this week, but there is nothing in it after you click on the tab. Please pardon our dust, we are working making that yet another way you can access our artist database. So it will be up very soon.

-The Album Release page was updated several times this week (it is turning into an everyday thing). Album artwork for The Almost, So Long Forgotten, Mae, We Shot The Moon, and Ahmad was uploaded this week. Also note the new release dates from The Color Morale, Brifrost Arts, along with Secret & Whisper were added. I hope this page allows you to stay up to date on what is coming out, and makes you music buying a little easier.

-Fixed some glitches with discographies in the artist database. Let us know if you see anything strange, there are a lot of bios in the system, and we don’t always notice every glitch.

Blog/Articles Updates

-New Releases: There were a TON of new albums this week. Over 20! Abandon finally released their full-length, Oh Sleeper unleashed their epic concept album, and worship leader Matt Redman made his latest batch of worship service staples available to the public. My favorite of the week came from new comers So Long Forgotten, a progressive rock band who currently have their amazing new album up for free download at noisetrade.com

-Music News: Sad news from Jeremy Camp, new music video from Grits, album info for Relient K, and a break-up announcement from Capital Lights. Check it out for much more on your favorite artists!

-Free Album Downloads: a quirky little album from our buddies Brian Lee & His Orchestra. If you are in to progressive indie folk, you may want to check this one out. Its free, so what you have to lose.

-Voices Of The Underground2 Pt.2- We talked with all of our artists about how they got started in music. Surprisingly, most started on piano. New faces to the fold this week include members from Future Of Forestry and White Collar Sideshow.

Artist Database Updates

-switched some our ads around to better serve you finding some of this great music you are discovering through the website. You can now join up with eMusic and Secondspin.com faster in the artist database.

Profiles Added:
Relient K
John Reuben
The Ember Days
Abel
Ascend The Hill
So Long Forgotten
Lights
Alison Krauss
Jason Upton
Diamond Rio

Thats it guys, see you next week!

Voices Of The Underground2 Pt.2

Posted by ian On August - 27 - 2009

votu2logo-copy2

Voices Of The Underground is a series that seeks to explore one question from many different angles. Every week, we will ask one question of many of your favorite music artists. We will post their responses below, and what you will find is that there is never truly one answer to every question, but instead a whole world of ideas that come from simple matters of taste, to deep held beliefs. Our hope is that through this series you are able to see past the promo pictures and the stage persona, and get to know the hearts of believers who are creating music every day.

Need to catch up?
Read Pt.1-What do you love about music?

For week two, we are introducing a new question to the fold.  I am always so interested to hear what made people the way they are today. With musicians, there is always a beginning: a school play, a recital, or a rush of cofidance with a nearby microphone.  Most musicians will tell you that tehy knew they wanted to play music their whole lives, and now we get to see where it all began.

Joining the fold is Eric Owyoung, who most people will know as the face of Future Of Forestry, and Veronica Benton, also known as The Faceless Woman for White Collar Sideshow. White Collar is on the latest cover of HM Magazine right now, and Future Of Forestry will be releasing a new EP Oct.6th. So, go see White Collar Sideshow on tour and in the pages of HM, and look for Travel II EP soon!

What was your first musical experience?

future-of-forestry-copy
I grew up playing classical music in symphonies. Saxophone, Basoon, and classical choirs. I’m so grateful for those experiences. It led me to study classical conducting in college, and that background still plays a big part in my music today. My music tends to have a very orchestrated, melodic direction to it.

thousand-foot-krutch-fm-static-copy
I sang at my aunt’s wedding and learned how to do the “moonwalk” when I was 8.

wonder-copy
First real experience was when I was 13 emceeing in a group called Dream and Wonder. Part of a crew called Circle of the Sane and we performed in Coral Springs Florida.

mychildren-mybride-copy
When I was 7, my grandfather gave me an acoustic guitar. I remember playing that all night, I never knew how to play anything, but shortly after receiving that guitar, I had a strong desire to learn piano, that same year, I was put in piano class. I would stay up all day and night on my Casio keyboard attempting to learn songs, until I finally learned Van Morrison‘s, “Moon Dance.”

love-begotten-copy
I started playing when I was 15ish, I never thought I was good enough to play in bands, then I got into my first few bands and realized any level of skill player can have a band.

venia-copy
I started playing guitar when I was a freshman in high school. My first band started a year later. I played in that band for a few years. Venia started right after I graduated high school.

whitecollarsideshowv-copy1
I used to love singing in school plays. I thought I was so cool…

yours-for-mine-copy
My earliest memory of playing an instrument is at my grandfather’s house when he would teach me how to play songs on a little Casio keyboard my parents had gotten me for Christmas one year. I loved it. I guess technically my first band was the middle school concert band. I played the clarinet but eventually moved on to the BASS clarinet because it was more manly. I was in the school band from 6th grade through my senior year of high school, including marching band and jazz band. I played the bass clarinet for most of concert band but moved to percussion for a few semesters of marching band as well as the tenor sax one semester. Looking back on it, I had a lot of fun in band.

the-glorious-unseen-copy
My first musical experiences were at church growing up. My dad was the pastor, so my brothers and I always sat on the front row. We sat there and watched the drummer every Sunday morning and we thought it was the coolest thing ever.

preson-phillips-copy
I grew up in a musical family. From the time I was four I was required to play one instrument for 2 hours every day. I could play whatever instrument I wanted though. I hated it. But now I can pretty much play anything (trumpet, baritone, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, bass, piano, trombone…etc). I started playing music solo when I was 18. I didn’t play in a band until I got out of college, we were called Malayne (now all of those guys are in Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster). I also had a year long stint as the guitar player in a hardcore band with Sleeping By The Riverside frontman Adam Warshowski, we were called Affix-Bayonets.
After a while I just kinda realized that I should be singing my own music.

the-chariot-copy
My first musical experience was in the 5th grade talent show when my friend and I played “Machine Head” by Bush, with no vocals, I played drums and he played guitar. We ruled.

dignan-copy
When I was in elementary school, my brothers came home one day with a guitar and a bass. Although my oldest brother had always played drums, no one in my family or myself especially had shown much interest in learning how to play music until then. I didn’t pick up either of those instruments for a while. Instead I starting using our computer in about 4th grade to make MIDI songs. I didn’t really write my own songs in the MIDI format, I would actually transpose songs I heard into the format, note by note by note. I think that doing that at such a early age and paying such close attention to detail in each song really taught me a lot about melodies and chord progressions. That I would say was my first musical experience.

whitecollarsideshowt-copy
Believe it or not, piano…I picked up drumsticks at age 11 and haven’t put them down since.

redemption-copy
When I was in 4th Grade, my mom and step-dad decided I needed to start taking lessons of some kind… and we all agreed on trumpet. Since then, I’ve been playing music in some form or another.

bodies-of-water-copy
I took group piano lessons at the Yamaha company. I found out later that these kind of lessons are called the ‘suzuki method,’ and I vouch for them. It trains you to identify notes by ear before you begin playing them. This is surprisingly easy for most kids. Western music schools and teachers don’t seem to bother to teach kids how to listen focus. I am all for this suzuki method. I took them for a year or two, and then switched over to taking traditional sort of lessons from a friend of my parents, but I think I got off on the right foot with this suzuki method. I LOVE THE SUZUKI METHOD.

gileah-and-the-ghost-train-votu2-copy2
I started playing piano when I was four. I was horrible to my piano teacher, so my dad let me learn from books. I had to play the entire piano book for dad before he would buy me the next in the series. I’m afraid I still play at the last level that I learned!

a-hope-for-home-votu2-copy1
I remember stumbling across my parents records as a kid and playing Elton John and lots of movie soundtracks. That had a really big effect on me, and my first concert as a child was Elton John (lame, I know), but I remember recognizing songs that I had listened to on the record player, but hearing them in a live environment. After that I started playing guitar and it all went downhill from there!

Free MP3 Album:Brian Lee & His Orchestra-Vol.II

Posted by ian On August - 26 - 2009

So a long time ago (well it seems like a long time ago for me), in February, we as a website were beginning to pick up a little steam. One of seemingly ongoing features that we were beginning to offer every week was these full album downloads that we found from all over the net.  One of our favorites came from a same indie folk band out of Nashville called Brian Lee & His Orchestra.  Their free download of Vol.I has been a staff favorite around here since before we posted it.  Check out Vol.I by Brian Lee & His Orchestra

Well, here we are some great amount of time later, and Brian Lee & His Orchestra has another album for you, and once again it is for free.  This time around, the boys have gone a little more indie than folk, and there are some truely interesting songs on here.  The thing that stands out, as did with Vol.I, is the intellegent songwriting.  These guys really think everything through, and it shows.

I hope you enjoy this, and I hope that (if you havent already) you would go download their other CD as well.  Believe me, you will be a fan.

For fans of: Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Bradley Hathaway

Click on the link below, save the .ZIP file to your computer, EXTRACT ALL FILES, and enjoy.

Weekly Update 8/21/09

Posted by ian On August - 21 - 2009

Hello to all the amazing people who read our site, we love you. Really, your participation in this website makes everything worth it.  Every time you visit, it counts as only good stuff for us as a group.  So, thank you….

If you will remember, a few months back, we announced that we were going to tone things down a little bit on the site.  At the time, we were putting up three posts a day, beginning to build our artist database, and trying to manage our emerging “ezine” persona.  In all honesty, we never intended to use The One21 as a magazine-type website. Our original idea for this blog was to simply communicate our passion and try to begin to introduce the world to a larger perspective of “Christian music”in modern culture.

Well, God, as He always does, has His own plans for things, and seven months in to our existence we were doing interviews,  reporting on news, and in general acting like more of a magazine.

However, the true intention of this site, The One21 Music, was to build a tool that could fully introduce the people to the vast body of music made by believers. So, in May, we officially began to build our artists database. We started strong, found out we weren’t doing it right, started over, added a few features, went back and added those features to the existing profiles, went back and edited, and then once again began to add new artists, and here we are.

Confused? Dont worry, all of that was my long way of saying that we are now 260 artists strong in our database, and every week we are adding on average 6-10 new entries.  The profiles span over 10 genres, 3 categories, and over 120 styles (sub-genres).  We are doing our best to make sure that any fan, of any type of music will have a place on this website.  You can go see our progress by clicking on the “Artist Search” tab up at the top of this page, or you can click here.
Also, if there is particular artist you want to check out, you can get to them quickly by typing in www.one21music.com/(artist name) into the address bar on your browser (so an example would be www.one21music.com/owl city).  If you dont get anything, it most likely means we have not gotten that particular artist into the system yet, but don’t fret because we are working on it.

Alright, with so much going on, Chuck and I thought it would be a good idea to start giving you guys weekly rundowns on what is happening here on the site.  So at the end of the week, we will recap what we have been writing about on the blog, in the database, and what is happening in our company.  Our hope is that not only will you stay up to date to what is happening on the blog, and what new artists you may want to check out, but also that you would get to know us as people and as a company. So, here we go, this our first real update so I hope you enjoy:

General Site Updates:

-First of all, you may notice that we have a new banner. The old one was cool and everything, but as we turn the corner on this website, we wanted to go with something a bit “cleaner” looking. Plus, I (Ian) was really tired of looking at myself every time I looked at the site (yes, if you remember the guy in the banner, that was a big ‘ol profile of me, myself, and I).

-We launched our “Album Release” page this week. this page contains dates, titles, and album artwork(when available) for all the upcoming CDs from Christian artists. It will be updated often, and in future “update” posts I will keep you up to date on what we have added to the page. Go check out all the upcoming releases here.

-We got rid of our “Music Artists” and “Christian Labels” tabs. With the database, we don’t need the “Artist” tab, although you may see a newer, more accessible version of it pop up in the near future. All the information from the “Christian Labels” can now be found in our “Links” page. You can click on the “Links” tab at the top of the page or just click here

.

Blog/Article Updates:

-New Releases-The big release this week came from MuteMath, but Manic Drive and Take It Back! also released somke new stuff this week.
-Music News- new videos from John Reuben, Paramore, and Philmont, along with new album info for Abandon Kansas, and a lot of bands leaving their labels and others getting signed.
-Free Download- a new little DJ album from hip-hop artist Playdough. Very strange, but hard to pass up for free.
-Voices Of The Underground2 Pt.1- Begin a new “season” of our round table interview series by asking Thousand Foot Krutch, White Collar Sideshow, Gileah Taylor, and many others what they love about music.

Artist Database Updates:

-Chuck has moved around some genre definitions to best suite our Praise & Worship, and Gospel fans.

Profiles added:

Also, this weekend we will be holding a meeting to try and figure out a possible One21 Fest here in Austin, Texas. If you are reading this and have some ideas, please speak up. Until next week, God bless, and have a great weekend.

Christian Music Is Not A Genre, It Is A Movement

Voices Of The Underground2 Pt.1

Posted by ian On August - 20 - 2009

votu2logo-copy2

Voices Of The Underground is a series that seeks to explore one question from many different angles.  Every week, we will ask one question of many of your favorite music artists.  We will post their responses below, and what you will find is that there is never truly one answer to every question, but instead a whole world of ideas that come from simple matters of taste, to deep held beliefs. Our hope is that through this series you are able to see past the promo pictures and the stage persona, and get to know the hearts of believers who are creating music every day.

Our first question is one that appeared in the last season of Voices of The Underground. It is simple question that encites many different answers, and gives us a look in to the passion that many musicians carry with them as they write, play, and perform music.  You can see all the answers to the last time we asked this question, and then enjoy what our new VOTU participants have to say.

What  Do You Love About Music?

a-hope-for-home-votu2-copy1
You know, to be honest, I’m not sure how to answer that question. I’ve always loved music, since listening to movie soundtracks as a kid and playing trombone in high school and college. I’m attracted to music that draws heavy emotion in ways that words can’t really express, I guess.

bodies-of-water-copy
Not sure. Good vibes???

dignan-copy
Everything!! I think my favorite thing about music though is that there can be so many different ways of conveying the message of the material across, whether it be through a subtle single note or a huge anthemic chorus. I tend to pay more attention to the actual melodies and harmonies behind the music rather than the lyrics, and I just find joy in music when I listen to maybe one part of a song, and in that one part of the song I can feel this deep connection with the feel/theme of the song. Words don’t necessarily have to be sung, there are so many different avenues that one can take to get their final emotions felt, and when they find that right path it can be very beautiful.

gileah-and-the-ghost-train-votu2-copy2
Listening to my favorite record or song (of the moment) is as intimate as sitting down and having a conversation with a good friend. I listen to The Innocence Mission and I feel like I know them….I feel like I’ve known them for nearly half my life. Their music is always there for me…that’s pretty cool. As an artist, you can really be something special to a listener.

love-begotten-copy
I love how diverse music can be, music can be beautiful, music can be ugly, music can be both at the same time. Everyone can relate to music.

mychildren-mybride-copy
I love the powerful but serene sentiment I receive. Different music tends to submit me to a different particular mood.

preson-phillips-copy
Music pulls out all these emotions that you sometimes didn’t know were there. It does things that you don’t realize it is doing.
I remember when “Rogue Wave”s first album came out. I was in Seattle with my wife and we bought the album to listen to while we were exploring the city. When we got back home to Tampa, one of the songs from that album played on my Ipod and instantly I felt like I was there again. Memories came back and even some of the smells and sounds of the city.
That’s why it is so amazing. It really does embed itself into your mind.
The great thing about Worship music is that you say things that you would have never said in normal everyday language. If you were to quote some old hymn during a corporate prayer you might sound ridiculous and pharisaical, but during a song you are free speak in creative ways.
Thats why I love it!

redemption-copy
Since I can remember, music has been the connective force between almost everything important in my life, be it faith, lifestyle, ethics, politics, relationships, etc. Music, in it’s various forms, as influenced and directed my life in ways I would have never imagined when my mom bought my first record (Michael Jackson “Thriller”) back in the early 1980s.

Music is a beautiful form of expression because like, most art medians, it is an opportunity to share yourself or an idea with others and its fun.

I love being able to lose myself in it. I love to be carried to a different place through it. I love to FEEL something through it. I love to identify with the lyrics – even if I have not been through exactly what the artist is saying at times, I love to FEEL what they must’ve felt when writing the lyrics. I love to let the music affect my mood, to enhance my experiences.

Man….what don’t I love about music!

I have always been drawn to music because it gives me an outlet to express myself. Specifically hardcore music gives me a place to be who I am and stand for what I believe in.

It’s a universal language that we can use as a platform to inspire, challenge and encourage people to do more with their life. It’s a great conversation starter and allows an opportunity to build a relationship with others.

I love the way you it speaks to the heart. Songs can take you back to memories-whether good or bad. You hear a song and it can remind you of exactly where you were and how you felt when listening to it. Can you remind you of heartbreak, celebration, love, etc… I also love the aspect of it telling a story and how its someones feelings exposed for all to see.

As cheesy as it sounds, music has the ability to take you other places. Certain music triggers certain memories, feelings and emotions. It can remind you of people, places, and times in your life. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes its bad. But it’s always an awesome experience. For me, a great song is just satisfying. I listen to a well written song and I’m satisfied, like I just ate an awesome meal. Music is also one of the best ways to glorify our creator. Music is talked about a lot in the Bible as a very important tool for worship. In my opinion, nothing is more satisfying than worshiping God through a great song.

So this is kind a strange little offering. I think it is by Deepspace5/Ill Harmonics member Playdough. There arnt any words, this album is social commentary through beats and samples. That’s the best way I can describe it, seriously.  But it is different, something to tickle the brain with, and it’s free so you may just want to try it out..

For fans of: DJ Shadow, Mars Ill, Jurassic 5
