Essential Songs: In Exile By Thrice

thrice in exile

With the release of 2009′s Beggars, Thrice once again not only trumped their previous effort, but also dug farther into the vast symbolism that acts as singer Dustin Kensrue‘s declaration of faith. While previous songs have only hinted at Thrice‘s more spiritual side, Beggars contains more vivid and frank imagery concerning Kensrue‘s relationship with God.

The lyrics speak for themselves, and “In Exile” may as well be named “In Exile From Heaven” as Thrice pour out what is to be separated from our true home in Heaven. With equal parts calm acknowledgment and constant yearning, “In Exile” could be song over congregations as well as concert goers. Partner the beautiful lyrics with one of Thrice‘s more experimental song structures, and “In Exile” has the potential to be added to the pile of classic songs of our time, Christ-centered or not.

Buy this song on iTunes and Amazon MP3

Check out Thrice’s One21 Artist Profile

I am in exile, a sojourner
A citizen of some other place
All I’ve seen is just a glimmer in a shadowy mirror
But I know, one day well see face to face

I am a nomad, a wanderer
I have nowhere to lay my head down
There’s no point in putting roots too deep when I’m moving on
Not settling for this unsettling town

My heart is filled with songs of forever
The city that endures when all is made new
I know I don’t belong here, I’ll never
Call this place my home, I’m just passing through

I am a pilgrim, a voyager
I wont rest until my lips touch the shore
Of the land that I’ve been longing for as long as I’ve lived
Where they’ll be no penalties anymore

My heart is filled with songs of forever
The city that endures when all is made new
I know I don’t belong here, I’ll never
Call this place my home, I’m just passing through

2010: My Fast From Secular Music

A lot has changed for me this year. In 2009, my wife and I moved to a new apartment, I started The One21 Music, my grandmother passed on, I met some great new friends, reconnected with some old ones, started a band, went to SXSW for the first time (really), grew my beard out (epic), did a ton of interviews, saw some amazing music, tried to buy a house and failed, and celebrated my 3rd year of marriage. There was a lot more, but those are some of big points for me. 2009 has been eventful to say the least.

The other night, my wife and I were sitting in our office on our separate computers (she’s a Mac, Im a PC), and as usual, we were listening to music. Our usual routine is to listen to all the new music we have consumed and rate the songs as they play, so at least we know we have listened to every song in our library at least once. As we were listening to the latest batch of unlistened songs, she commented that I was listening to a lot more Christian music. Now, I have never really kept count, but she went on to say that I have also been listening to a lot more worship, contemporary, and deeply spiritual music since I have been writing for One21. I almost didn’t agree with her until I started putting together my “Best of 09″ list and compared it to last years. In 2008, my top 20 only contained three albums made by Christian artists; but in 2009, 13 of the albums are made by artists we cover on this website. It would seem that (like most times), my wife was right.

So what has changed? Was 2009 just an amazing year for Christ-centered music? Was it a really bad year for secular music? Was I only buying more music by believers because I was doing this website? To tell you the truth, I don’t know many of those answers, but I do know that I prefer most of the music on my list from 2009 over my list from 2008 (sorry Protest The Hero, Manchester Orchestra is awesome).

So it would seem that one of the things in my life that has changed the most is that I am not as interested in secular music as I used to be, and in fact despite a few shining stars this year (Brother Ali, St. Vincent), I’m rather bored with it. Most secular music for me lacks depth now. You see, the whole reason we started this site is because Chuck and I earnestly believe that some of the best music in the world is being made by Christians. Brothers and sisters who share our faith, and create art from a passionate heart changed by an all loving God. I really feel that my migration towards a steady diet of “Christian music” has been a positive one, and it stems out of my yearning to hear something real and innovative coming through my speakers.

So, I have decided to put our theory to practice: and for one year, in 2010; I, Ian Harvey am not going to purchase, download, or receive any secular music of any sort.

Now, I feel like I need to explain this a little so you understand a bit. First of all, in this 5th paragraph, I will tell you what I am NOT saying. This, self-imposed, fast from secular music does not mean that I am not going to LISTEN to any secular music. That is impossible, music is everywhere, and it should be. That would also mean that there would be a large portion of my music collection (14148 songs and counting; all legal baby!) that I would have to avoid like the plague. This would also mean that I wouldn’t be able to listen to music at work (my other job), and that isn’t going to happen either. If you think about it though, most people listen to the newest stuff they have in the library the most, so in all reality I wont be listening to a LOT of secular music, because all the NEW music I will be obtaining will be from Christian artists.

Let’s think about this from a logical point of view for a minute. We are in a recession, and times are hard. Read any paper, and you will see that people simply are not buying much anymore, because there isn’t much to buy things WITH. Music is one of my addictions, it is rare if a week goes by and I don’t obtain at least ONE new album, and most times it is more than that. While I don’t always BUY all the music I have in my computer (you know those free downloads we put up, I download them too; and I have become once a week visitor to Nosetrade.com, so that has been helping), but my resources are limited as well. So why wouldn’t I want to devote all those resources towards a group of artists that I believe are creating THE BEST product? If I really believe the stuff I have been writing about on this site, why wouldn’t I throw my full support at artists like Brooke Waggoner, Listener Project, So Long Forgotten, and The Chariot?

So this is what I am going to do. In 2010, all the NEW music that makes it into my library will be from artists who are Christ followers. I honestly feel that God is going to do something in me because of this, but I don’t know what quite yet. I feel like I have come a long way this year, so I’m going to keep running with it.

Here is the other thing, the WHOLE REASON I AM WRITING THIS BLOG: I want you to join me. I feel personally called to cleanse my palette (if you will) this year, and I also feel like there is somebody out there who feels the same. It’s not that the secular music we listen to is HORRIBLE (I’m gonna miss the new NIN record….just kidding), its just that we feel that God wants us to be encouraged by this, and to encourage the artists who share our faith to continue to keep doing what they are doing. It means that maybe you are going to have to wait on some music you want. It means that you are going to have to dig deeper into this music scene. You may even have to listen to some STYLES of music you have never really given a chance before. Maybe you will have to alter what you consider to be “Christian music”

But hey, at least you have a good website that can help you with some of that….

For some clarification on what I consider to be “Christian music”, please read the article The Many Facets of The Christian Music .

Please pray for me as I go through this next year, and maybe consider trying it out. I mean, I know we are not promised tomorrow, but it IS only a year commitment. Who knows though, maybe in 2011, you will be as let down by secular music as I am.

Voices Of The Underground is a series that seeks to explore one question from many different angles. Every week, we will ask one question of many of your favorite music artists. We will post their responses below, and what you will find is that there is never truly one answer to every question, but instead a whole world of ideas that come from simple matters of taste, to deep held beliefs. Our hope is that through this series you are able to see past the promo pictures and the stage persona, and get to know the hearts of believers who are creating music every day.

gileah-and-the-ghost-train-votu2-copy2
I’m going to address the girls: (Keep in mind that these are lessons I’ve learned the hard way….I wish I could have been wiser when I was young!)
Discipline yourself to write songs and learn your instruments and train your voice. I’ll gently suggest that you try to include your family as much as possible. You need accountability. Be modest in your heart and in your dress. Give your music to God now, before pride becomes an issue. (That was one of my big ones- I thought I was so awesome. Man, I was dumb.) Pray for open doors, but don’t just sit and wait for something good to fall in your lap. Again, discipline yourself in your art so you’ll be ready if you get the chance to share your music with the world!

a-hope-for-home-votu2-copy1
I would say for starters that there is more to life than being in a band. Not to be a downer, because I love doing this so, so much, but I think a lot of young bands have the tendency to elevate the idea of being in a band, an how “cool” that is, above a lot of things like friendships and relationships and maybe the other things God has called us to do. I’m not discouraging anyone from starting a band, but if you’re starting a band and your bass player really wants to go to college or get married or whatever, he’s not a jerk and you should still talk to him and be his friend. I’ve seen a lot of friends in bands, as well as myself, thinking being in a band is then end-all-be-all to my entire life, but there is so much more to God’s creation and kingdom than playing rock and roll.

bodies-of-water-copy
My advice is to not read reviews. Whether they are good or bad, finding out what a stranger thinks of what you’re making is always a negative experience. Even if it is on a sub-conscious level, you end up seeking approval instead of being open.

redemption-copy
Be less concerned with what is cool or trendy and more aware of creating music that you feel is genuine and well written.

whitecollarsideshowt-copy
Focus on God and build relationships with others. The great commandment. Be honest, transparent and wear your heart on your sleeve. Through this, you can be the change you want to see in the world. Don’t worry about “industry, business, units, friends or Myspace plays.” Just do what God is calling you to do and focus on him.

dignan-copy
Don’t start your band and start touring right away. Take your time building your local fan base, then gradually tour out regionally, then eventually and slowly work your way out to different areas of the country. Don’t expect to make money right away, unless your a cover band for some strange reason. And be smart with your money you do have, as much as it sucks, money can really make or break your band. Try to save on whatever you can, recording costs, duplication, merch, etc. I don’t know. This is all business stuff. But that’s what I wish we knew when we started.

the-chariot-copy
If you like writing, and playing music, don’t forget that you like writing and playing music.

preson-phillips-copy
Be humble, don’t have expectations other than to be a vessel of the Lord. Work to perfect your art. If you aren’t completely happy with a song don’t make us listen to it. Throw it away and write a new one. God demands our best and He deserves it. Be willing to play to a room of 2 people. You are not above it. And most of all, SMILE IN YOUR BAND PHOTOS!

the-glorious-unseen-copy
Follow the path that God is opening up for you. Be FAITHFUL in the opportunities you are given… Make sure you are following God’s path, not someone else’s path that you are trying to emulate. You don’t wanna become an imitator of some other band. Just be in prayer, seek after God – and walk through the doors that he opens for you. And continue to be faithful once he gives you the opportunity.

yours-for-mine-copy
It’s not as easy as it seems. If it’s not about the music, it’s not gonna work.

venia-copy
The best advice is to not get ahead of yourself. A lot of musicians want to start a band, and hit the road the next day. I think it is important to build up a local fan base, to spend time writing quality music, and make sure you are going to do decent on the road. I know we hit the road for a brief summer tour 2 years ago, and we were not ready for the road at all. We had no idea what we were doing yet, and our music was not up to par for a touring band at the time. We also ended up getting $6,000 worth of gear stolen out of our trailer.

love-begotten-copy
Practice! Always keep your priorities straight. If you’re a Christian band keep God first. Whatever your band has to say believe in it and practice it.

mychildren-mybride-copy
If any of you desire to make it as a musician, I must stress to you, that you must know your instrument. Practice your instrument and get good at it, a band only makes it if they’re good. Be a good person with a good personality, it’s hard to be in a band with someone they can’t get along with.

wonder-copy
Don’t quit. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Put Him first and all will be added to you.

thousand-foot-krutch-fm-static-copy
Be patient, everything in this industry takes time. What makes you/your band stand out from the rest(musical identity)? Find that, and embrace it. If you’re in it for the money, stop now. God will bless you if you’re faithful, and you work hard, but you need to be ready to eat at gas stations and sleep on van floors for a while….sometimes a long while. It’s all about awareness, get your band/music in front of people. God will do the impossible if you do the possible.

future-of-forestry-copy
Just make music out of love for it. Music totally sucks when you get into the whole rat-race. I’m constantly fighting that. Just dig your head into the notes and love every part of it.

*NOTE: this is the last of our Voices Of The Underground series. Thanks to all of the artists that participated, its been really great getting to know you guys better. Thanks to everybody who has been reading VOTU since we started it almost 8 months ago! For now, this is going to be the end of the series, we feel it is time to move on and do some some new stuff. Thanks again….

Essential Songs: You Won’t Relent by Misty Edwards

misty edwards praise

Misty Edwards is a worship leader and pastor of sorts for The International House Of Prayer in Kansas City.  She has been writing and recording music for almost 10 years now, and in most circles is considered one of the best worship leaders of our generation (along side names like Jason Upton and David Crowder).  She remains humble in the midst of her success, and still manages to fly some where under the radar so she can focus more on her ministry duties for IHOPKC.

Misty Edwards has this to say about her life:
“I have a great desire to see the knowledge of God flood this generation. I mean the real knowledge of God, not the distant Sunday School version but the true encounter with the Uncreated. I have devoted my life to searching Him out through His Word, prayer and fasting, and to ask Him to reveal Himself in my day and time. There’s no other point for my existence but to touch the Transcendent. I believe that this is the generation who will usher in the Son of Man as we intercede from our highest identity as a Bride crying out, ” Come!” unsatisfied with anything less than Him. As Eternity breaks in we will awaken the Dawn with a song and the Morning Star will rise to have His inheritance on this planet! This is all I care about.”

The song “You Won’t Relent” is perfect example of her writing style. It is a crushing worship song with tons build and emotion, and is a simple acknowledgment of God’s desire to have all of us in our worship and in our lives.

The video below is taken from the opening session of the OneThing Conference in Kansas City, and there is a small bit of another one of Misty‘s songs called “All Consuming Fire” at the end of the video.

You won’t relent
Until You have it all
My heart is Yours

I’ll set You as a seal upon my heart
As a seal upon my arm
For there is love that is as strong as death
Jealousy demanding as the grave
And many waters cannot quench this love

Come be the fire inside of me
Come be the flame upon my heart
Come be the fire inside of me
Until You and I are one

Free Download:Caleb Rowden-Demo Sessions

caleb rowden demo sessions

I realized the other day that when it came to these free downloads, we really havent done a whole lot of straight contemporary rock. That hasn’t been intentional, I promise, it is just that the guys who make the more experimental music tend to like to give it away more often.

Enter Caleb Rowden, a young solo artist and worship pastor who has been making a name for himself over the last few years as a talented worship leader and artist. His latest album was released in July, but recently he re-entered the studio and recorded these five brand new songs. Despite the fact that the word “demo” appears in the title, these songs sound pretty good to me. If you are into the more worship meets alternative rock thing, you need to download this one.

For fans of: Chris Tomlin, The Fray, Third Eye Blind

This one is a LITTLE different to download. The link below will take you to a bandcamp.com page. Click on that DOWNLOAD ALBUM button in the middle of the page, and they will get you to select file quality and few other things, then ask you for your email. They will send you an email with instructions on how to download the tracks.
