Destroy The Runner Break Up

destroy_the_runner

This week metalcore band Destroy The Runner announced that they would be calling it quits. The following is an official statement from the band:

To all of our fans that have become friends, we wish to thank you for your support and dedication to us, as a band and as individuals. Without you, Destroy the Runner would not have been able to have had the opportunities allowed to us along the way. We all posses an insurmountable gratitude for any and every one that has given our music a chance. There is an even greater gratitude we posses towards anyone who has helped us in any way on the road, or at home. We have been fortunate enough to have met some of the most incredible people on our journeys, and we thank all of you for imparting your fervor on us. We hope to see you all again one day. You have aided in our personal struggles and decisions as well. So, as words could never truly express our sentiments, thank you.
It is with this in mind that we wish to inform you that our time has run its course. We unfortunately must embrace an indefinite hiatus. We have sought to maintain musical integrity and honesty within all facets of our functioning, and, unfortunately, are not able to do so at this point in time. We have grown busier as the pains of real life and financial responsibilities keep us from a full time emersion into our passion for music. This has allowed compromise to enter the creative process. As soon as we could perceive this, we understood that it was time to give up the ghost, as compromise is the last thing we ever wish to entertain. This is the harsh face of reality.
Please be assured that past and present band members will forever remain lifelong friends. We have bonded in a way that cannot be described. We can each personally call every member, past and present, a brother.
With that being said, music will never fall far from any one of our lives. There are several side projects already underway and hopefully each and every one will reach your hearts and ears as Destroy the Runner has. Keep on the lookout for a softer, more experimental project with Nick, Duane, Marc, Jeremiah and several others called Other Mountains. Also check out Chapter 14 with Chad and Tanner. And for the super heavy fans, be on the lookout for a very heavy, experimental band with Nick, Duane (vocals), Kyle (from Thieves and Liars), and our guitar tech Jason that is yet to be named. It would not be far fetched if several other projects came out of Destroy the Runner. We will keep you informed on any music created or shows performed by any of these side projects.
Once again, thank you so much for your patronage. And I hope music will continue to affect your lives for the constant improvement as much as it has ours.

American Idol Season 9- The Recap

One21music covers Christian music artists competing on American Idol. Now that Michael Lynche, the last of the Christian music artists on Season 9, it looks like our job is over. But before we bow out of American Idol Season 9 we would like to offer our final thoughts.

This season had the lowest number of Christian music artists in recent memory and they certainly did not experience the success of Season 8 Christian music artists.  Michael Lynche, Tim Urban, Didi Benami and Lacey Brown made it to the American Idol Season 9 Top 12.  Lacey Brown was eliminated at 12 and Didi Benami was gone at 10.  In one of the best stories of Season 9 Tim Urban used his joyful determination to win the hearts of America and the respect of the judges to reach the number seven spot.

Now to Michael Lynche.  The behemoth of a man has been one of our favorites from the beginning. He never had an off key moment and he had the best performance of American Idol Season 9. Surprisingly, Michael Lynche was voted off at number nine only to be justifiably saved by the judges.  The problem with Michael’s game this season was that there was virtually no variety in his performances.  He quickly settled into the role of R&B balladeer and never showed his soul/funk shouter and R&B sides.

American Idol Season 9 is now left with three barroom acoustic rockers to claim the title. Casey James, Crystal Bowersox or Lee Dewyze will win American Idol Season 9.  They are all essentially different flavors of the same style.  Crystal Bowersox is the most versatile and developed of the three, but we don’t believe she will win.  Her image is a little rough for American Idol voters.  Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox will be in the final and Lee Dewyze will win American Idol Season 9.  Lee will be third male, acoustic pop rock winner of American Idol in a row.

Thank you for joining us on the American Idol Season 9 ride this year.  Check back in January 2011 as we begin the search for Christian music artists on American Idol Season 10.

The One21 Essential 100 Pt.14

essential100 copy

The One21 Essential 100 is a collection of albums that represent the best in creativity, innovation, and originality in music. This is not a “best of” list, nor is it influenced by album sales, or even popularity. Our attempt with this series is to highlight the gems, those rare albums that push boundaries and encourage new ways of thinking; both musical and philosophically. In our opinion, the music highlighted in this series is the “good stuff”.

Simply what this is going to be is a list of 100 albums from Christian music artists that we think you should own. Like our website, most genres will be represented, and some of the albums will be from as far back as the 60s, to as current as 2009. Each week we will post five albums, in no real order, with descriptions, album artwork, and places to buy the music.

Before I can gush on this album, I feel like I need to explain the concept. In 2005, the post-hardcore powerhouse known as Thrice announced that they were leaving their cushy major label record deal to strike it as an independent band once again. This came as quite a shock to their fans, considering they had released two monumental albums on during that time, and many were wary of the apparent step backwards. Was this the end of Thrice? Could they survive on their own?

In 2007 the band answered with a resounding yes, and monster collection songs now known as The Alchemy Index. The concept is this: The Alchemy Index is actually four, 6-song EPs, each one designated as a elemental force, and the music of the individual EP corresponds with the element. Confused? Think of it this way, the Fire EP is Thrice at their most familiar: heavy, loud, and abrasive. The Earth EP is Thrice embracing their folk influences, and the Water EP is atmospheric electronic music.

For most bands, this ambitious of a project would bury the key song writers, and would either require help from a producer or end up with the band never really fulfilling the original intent of the EPs. Thrice not only excelled on each style of music they choose, but every aspect of The Alchemy Index is Thrice, as they self-produced AND self-recorded the WHOLE thing. They didn’t create parodies of their favorite genres of music, they digested them, and made them their own. Each EP has so many gorgeous songs, simple displays of Thrice’s ability as a band, and then when you listen to them back to back, you can’t ignore that all of the different elements work as A WHOLE as well.

This is what true creative control sounds like.

Find me another band that undertook this kind of project, completed it, self produced and self recorded it, and THEN made four gems out of the EPs…..go ahead…..find me the band…..

Larry Norman-Rebel Poet, Jukebox Balladeer The Anthology
Rebel Poet, Jukebox Balladeer: The Anthology
Larry Norman

2008
Buy this album: Amazon, iTunes
I struggled with putting an anthology as an essential recording, but it was such a revelation for me that I must include it. I had missed Larry Norman altogether. I had heard of Larry Norman as the father of Christian rock music and I had heard his songs on tribute albums, but I had never heard Larry Norman until Rebel Poet, Jukebox Balladeer.

This music is as edgy and compelling as anything by Dylan, Lennon or Young. We did not hear of Larry Norman’s greatness because his answer was not to drop out, sit-in or riot. Larry Norman admonished us all to follow. His message to America in the 60’s and 70’s was to simply follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Neither the counter culture nor the establishment wanted to hear that impossibly simple admonishment, so Dylan is revered and Larry Norman is underground.

Moby - Everything Is Wrong
Everything Is Wrong
Moby

1995
Buy this album: Amazon, iTunes
For those of us who were listening in 1995, this was the breakthrough. This is when electronic become more than sound and dance music. Moby likes for us to dance and he wants to be the DJ guiding us around the dance floor, but on Everything Is Wrong he used our exuberance against us. He got us going with driving house beats only to change styles and beats so quickly that he made us stop and listen. Then Moby expresses his bewildered and desperate view of modern life by periodically yanking away the escape of blind, danceable ecstasy, using that discontinuity to express the eyes-wide-open ruminations of a furious idealist.

The desperate industrial plea of “All That I Need Is To Be Loved” rips back the cover right from the beginning. “All That I need is to be loved, can’t you take that out of me, all I want is to be near you, of my God how can I love thee” is shouted over a grinding industrial sound board. You can dance to this, but you must stop and listen first. “God Moving Over The Face of The Water” is one of the most beautiful seven minutes of instrumental music of the past 50 years. The ambient masterpiece “When It’s Cold I’d Like to Die” breaks your heart with deeply longing lyrics matched with crushingly sad music. The remix companion Everything Is Wrong Mixed and Re-mixed adds to the fun with multiple arrangements of these great songs.

Ramsie Shiek personally there
Personally There
Ramie Shik

1998
Buy this album: Amazon
Ramsie Shick’s voice is a force of nature, capable of touching tenderness and wild, unruly abandon. In another’s hands it could be Grace Slick, Joan Osborne, Patti Smith, or Melissa Etheridge, but this is something all on her own. She delivers the songs of Personally There with a pleading, almost manic fervor that draws you into the lyrics. Ramsie Shick has something to tell us and we want to listen.

Ramsie Shick’s dense, passionate lyrics are like the ramblings of a stream of consciousness preacher/poet – and maybe they are – but coupled with the music of her mind, the touch of her fingers on her guitar, and her muscular, competent band, they are transformed into living, breathing pieces of art and ministry. The sound is modern yet the tone is ancient or maybe timeless. It is almost as if an unpublished prophet has returned to deliver first hand insight into God’s word.

Kaboose-Excuse Me
Excuse Me
Kaboose

2008
Buy this album: Amazon, iTunes
The modern face of hip-hop is a sad one. We have seen a truly creative and viable artform has become a machine that celebrates mediocrity and debauchery. Emcees willing to talk about ANYTHING that means anything has become a rarity, and when it does happen, most artists lose site that their music supposed to also entertain. In 2008, creative, meaningful hip-hop proved that it was still alive and well with Kaboose’s Excuse Me.

The balance of fun and earnest is evident in every track. Kaboose is aware that even if you have something good to say, you still have to make sound good. On some tracks, he talks about his past, on some he addresses his culture (Kaboose is half Native American), but it is Kaboose‘s faith that shines like a spotlight on every track. You can tell he is a man, with flaws and faults of his own, that is desperately trying to live for God, and be a light to all around him.

Let us not forget for one minute here that Kaboose is also a PHENOMENAL emcee. He would seriously be able to rival Eminem, RedCloud, and Kayne as a word smith, and he is flawless on his delivery. This is truly one of those guys that would succeed in the mainstream rap game, if that was what he desired. Fortunately, Kaboose will never be part of that machine, but he will always let his faith dictate his art. Excuse Me is a must have for anybody who wants to know what hip-hop is all about.
Highlights: Goin’ Outta Control, Build It Up, Be First, Intercontinental Grand Dragon

American Idol Season 9- Top 4 Results

Last night’s show ended with mentor Jaime Foxx making excuses for the American Idol Season 9 Top 4.  It seems that Jaime Foxx believes movie songs make it difficult for the Idols to show off their talents.  Then why does American Idol put these songs into the competition at this critical juncture?

Usually, the duets aren’t too great.  Last night they were the best parts of the show.  What does that say about the star power of the American Idol Season 9 Top 4?  No one really distinguished themselves last night, so anyone could go home.

I think Casey James and Christian music artist Michael Lynche will be in the Bottom 2.  Casey James starts his new, post Idol, career tonight and that seems about right.

Join us to find out what really happens as we live blog the American Idol Season 9 Top 4 results show.

37 million votes were cast so American Idol Season 9 continues to lag behind the last two seasons.  Tonight is an American Idol homecoming for uni-named former Idols as Daughtry and Fantasia perform.  Speaking of which, Fantasia kicks off the night with a song from her up coming cd.  I never really got Fantasia and I still don’t.

Back with the American Idol Season 9 Top 4, sitting on the stools in the middle of the stage.  Boy, do they look nervous.  Whoever, survives tonight’s vote gets a hero’s trip home this coming week.  Let’s find out who is safe.  Casey James is safe.  It looks like Michael Lynche is going home and it looks like he knows it.

Daughtry sings a song from his new cd.  How can a bald man have such thick eyebrows?  Daughtry was on American Idol before I started watching and I don’t listen to his style of pop rock very much, but he sure can sing.

Back with the three in danger.  Casey James is safe.  Lee Dewyze is safe and gets his homecoming next week.  Michael Lynche and Crystal Bowersox fates still hang in the balance.

Bon Jovi time. I wonder if this distracts Michael Lynche and Crystal Bowersox from what is happening or if their sweet seats for Bon Jovi are wasted.  The seats would be wasted on me as I worried about what was about to happen.

Christian music artist Michael Lynche goes home.  I am sorry to see Michael Lynche go.  He was my favorite of the Top 12.

Michael is the last of our Christian music artists on American Idol Season 9.  Join us Saturday as we recap American Idol Season 9.

American Idol Season 9-Top 4 Performances

American Idol Season 9 is in the home stretch.  Two more weeks to the finals and the entire season is really up in the air.  As weak as we believe Casey James appears, any one of the top 4 can win. In our American Idol Season 9 Power Rankings we discuss how close the top 4 are and how victory will be determined by who can deliver one or two break out performances over the next few weeks.

Tonight the American Idol Season 9 performers will perform one solo song and perform one duet.  Jaime Foxx will mentor the Idols as they sing songs form the movies. Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox will be paired in one duet while the Michael Lynche and Casey James will team up for the other song. The duets the past few years have been a waste of time.

Will Christian music artist Michael Lynche change his style to try to create an attention grabbing spectacle tonight?  Will Crystal Bowersox regain her form?  Can Casey James recover and stay on the show?  Will Lee Dewyze continue to play it safe and skate to the finals?  Join us as we live blog the American Idol Season 9 top 4 performances and maybe get some answers to these questions.

Remember Jamie Foxx is an Oscar winning actor and triple platinum R&B artist.  He brought tshirts.  He challenged the Idols to move from being a contestant to being an artist.

Lee Dewyze is doing Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose”.  Jaime Foxx got uncomfortably close to Lee’s face during rehearsals.  Lee just proved that his upper range has a very low limit and has fallen off key.  This is not the time for Lee to sing badly. He fights this song all of the way through.  That was as bad as Lee Dewyze has done this season.  Randy does not like the song choice but brushes over the singing.  Ellen feeds the Lee PR beast.  Kara, speak truth.  She calls out all of the bad singing but, in the end, she says he is great.  Simon says it sounded karaoke.  I would say bad karaoke.

Michael Lynche made a promise to himself a year ago to make it into the Top 3 on American Idol Season 9.  He is singing Michael Jackson‘s “Will You Be There”.  He starts on the stairs and is backed by a choir.  He is giving this the full gospel treatment. It had potential but never reached its crescendo.  The performance just did not have time to develop.  Randy does not like it.  Kara says he played it safe. Simon tried to find something nice to say.

Next up with the first duet.  Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze perform “Falling Slowly”.  This is two great singers going at it.  Kinda feels that they are battling rather than singing together. This pales in comparison to the original Randy loves it. Ellen compares them to Captain and Tenille.  Kara says it is one of her best moments of the season.  Simon says it was fantastic.

I just went back and watched Lee’s and Crystal’s duet.  Okay, so I was wrong.  That was pretty great.

Time for Casey James from Cool, Texas.  He is singing “Mrs. Robinson” playing a mandolin. This a nice Casey performance but it is a little sleepy for me. The mandolin is a nice touch, but the song does not build.  there is not much there to hold on to.  I agree with Randy that it was cool but there was not much exciting.  Ellen calls him out for not going further with the song.  Kara gets lost in the meaning of the song.  Simon says the performance had the substance  needed for this point in the competition.  I agree with Simon.

Crystal Bowersox is singing a song from “Caddyshack.” Yep, she is singing “I’m All Right.”  She re-arranges the song into an alt-country, blues number.  I am not sure I like the arrangement but it gives Crystal an opportunity to show off her voice.  This is her best performance in weeks. Randy like that she switched the arrangement but did not love the performance.  Ellen and Kara say she made the song better than the original.  Simon says she is back in the game.

We end the evening with Michael Lynche and Casey James singing “Have You Ever Really Loved A Women”.  Casey starts playing some sweet Spanish guitar.  Their voices sound good together.  That was a nice performance with a twist.  Randy calls it brilliant.  Kara says the duets were incredible, better than all of the solo performances.  Simon says it was really good.

Well, there it is.  The American Idol Season 9 Top4 have made their cases.  Join us tomorrow night as we live blog the results and see who gets the hometown parade.
