Cornerstone As A Family

Posted by ian On June - 30 - 2010

I could easily post something today about all the amazing music I have seen since I have been at Cornerstone Festival 2010. In fact, it is only the beginning of day three here and i could write a book. Love Begotten, Ascend The Hill, Listener Project, So Long Forgotten, White Collar Sideshow, In The Midst Of Lions, and I Am Alpha & Omega have all reminded me why I love music so much. I WILL post in more detail about the individual shows I have seen later, but first I want to talk about a concept that the vocalist for Love Begotten touch on during their set.

Losing focus in a place like this is all too easy. From the outside, and maybe a little bit from the inside, Cornerstone is just a music festival. A place where a whole bunch of musicians come to gather in a small area and compete for fan’s attention all day with shows, merch, and flyers. It should be no different than SXSW.

But this IS different, because this is the Body.

Metal, folk, electronica, hip-hop, punk, progressive rock, worship; these are all genres being represented here this week, but yet in some way they are all singing the same song. This festival is a celebration of art created from hearts changed by Jesus Christ, and in that way this is a family reunion. The fans, the artists, the label owners and promoters come here to gather as a community and enjoy each other. I felt this the most as I embraced (that means hugged by the way) Dan Smith better known as Listener, T from White Collar Sideshow, and Donny from I Am Alpha & Omega as brothers and not as strangers. We are coming together here to experience God’s heart through music, and it is beautiful.

There is nothing else on Earth like this!

At the heart of it, this sense of community is what this website is about. We wanted to create a place for people to come and experience music that connects them to other believers, no matter what the music sounds like. As I have been walking around taking in this festival, I am reminded of the first time I came here in 2002, and how the sense of connection to all the performers has not faded a bit so many years later.

We are the Body, and this music is our voice. Use it, embrace it, and let it change you.

Cornerstone 2010- Monday Is Spectacular

Posted by chuck On June - 29 - 2010

I told you to check in with us this week.  We have Internet connectivity so you will get all the reporting from Cornerstone 2010.  We tried to write this post last night but uploading video proved to be an exercise in patience using mobile broadband (I use the term broadband loosely), but hey, two years ago we could not even get a cell phone signal at Cornerstone Farms.  Over the next week you will get a little video but a lot of pictures and reports so that you can share in Cornerstone 2010 as it is happening.  When we return to the office we will flood our sites with our accumulated videos, reviews and interviews. We can get Internet access so we will share with you every day of Cornerstone 2010.

Yesterday was spectacular.  The first day is usually a challenge because your are trying to check-in, set-up, re-organize Ian and Rebeccaaround the final schedule and the Cornerstone staff and volunteers are learning as they go.  Yesterday was different.  We drove right in, secured a golf cart for rapid transportation around Cornerstone Farm, set-up camp and had time for lunch before our shows started.  Oh, by the way, the weather is spectacular with a capital S. Only a few clouds, highs in the mid 80′s.  It was cool enough last night that I crawled into my sleeping bag at about 4 a.m. Here is Ian, our president and the master of all knowledge about Christian music and our professional photographer Rebecca (note: none of the pictures in today’s post we taken by Rebecca, she is much better than this.)  The best part is that we four great shows among the seven or eight we visited.  The Unfortunate ( a jazz-blues quartet), Josh Davenport (a Delta blues guitar player), The Listener Project (talk music extravaganza) and Oh Sister Oh Brother (indie, electro pop).

The Listener Project Cornerstone 2010As Debbie joined me to play out the schedule I had so carefully planned out and re-planned out the weeks leading up to Cornerstone 2010, Ian bounded up to our golf cart. “Listener is playing a surprise show at the Sanctuary Stage at 4:15.  You guys have to come see him!  They are like nothing you have every experienced.”  We have been fans of The Listener Project for over a year.  Before they had even settled in, found a camp site or found there bearings The Listener Project were up on stage playing a burning set of dense free flowing talk music about building bridges, ship wrecks and a number of other allegories about living in this world.

Through the set, Dan Smith flowed, stomped and ranted solo, with banjo, electric and acoustic guitar, a trumpet and fluglehorn.  Immediately, after their set we rushed over to the merch table, with about half of the capacity audience, to pick their new cd “Wooden Heart”.  They were intense, complex and deep, you could say that Dan Smith is even manic.  I would say The Listener Project is deeply entertaining Dan Smith’s style of ranting poetry is unique in both the Christian and secular music scene.  Cornerstone moment number 1, surprise show by a great artist we had planned to see.

Next, Debbie and I wandered off to see a couple of bands and surprise!, the schedule at our next stage changed.  Misions was not at the Impact Stage and they were running behind schedule.  But, we did stumble upon Oh Sister Oh Brother , an indie, electro pop band form Illinois.  Their music was light and airey.  It made us happy.  The trio seemed surprised and thrilled that we all came to see them.  The good sign was that the longer they played the more people streamed into the tent.  By the way, their bass player was funky and melodic.  Cornerstone moment number two. Stumble upon a band you have never heard and then you fall in love. Here is a sample

After dinner we split from Ian and Rebecca, to spend the evening at the Chelsea Cafe, a stage sponsored Grrr Records Josh Davenport Cornerstone 2010and Project 12 (more on than later).  First up, Josh Davenport burned the Chelsea Cafe up with a screaming set of sludgy Delta Blues.   He started his set with three snarly songs from early blues legends like Leadbelly and Rev. Gary Davis.  It was hot, slide guitar wailing about the hard life of early 20th century black men in America.  He then launched into his own songs of blues about social injustice and God’s sovreigntry over the Earth.  Most of his set he played a homemade guitar (a box, a long neck and duct tape).  When Josh Davenport introduced his “made guitar” he told of his philisophy: Christ found us broken and discarded in the alley.  He rebuilt us into something pleasing.  We should take the broken things (objects, relationships and people) and invest ourselves to re-make those found objects into something pleasing to God. I thought that was pretty cool.

We ended the day with our favorite show of the day.  The Unfortunate play a smokey version of jazz and blues.  Led by singer Ami Moss, The Unfortunate took us through songs about the sanctity of marriage and the joy of a covenant love affair.  Ami Moss sang about our pursuit of worldly acceptance in “Fashion As Idolatry”.  They ended their set singing the jazz standard “Summertime” and were joined by Ami Moss’s father, legendary Christian blues artist and preacher Glenn Kaiser.

The Unfortunate Cornerstone 2010

Overall, this was a great start to what is shaping up to be a great Cornerstone Music Festival.

Cornerstone 2010 Has Arrived At One21music

Posted by chuck On June - 28 - 2010

1100 miles, 4 states, 3 tanks of gas and 17 hours and Cornerstone 2010 is here.  I guess I should say that One21music is here. We left Austin at midnight Sunday morning and arrived in  MaCombs, Il at 5:30 Sunday evening.  I sit in the lobby of the Best Western Hotel waiting to set up camp at Cornerstone 2010

We are unsure of out Internet availabilty once we enter the farm so this may be our last post for the week.  We hope not because we want you to experience Cornerstone 2010 along with us. If this is our last post for the week, check back on July 6th as we start to flood the site with memories, insights, photos and videos from Cornerstone 2010.

Today we pitch tents, organize the camp site, get our press credentials set and start meeting our 30,000 new neighbors.  In all of that we will try to catch shows from Love Begotten, 2X  The Mono and the Unfortunate.

Check in regularly to see if we are able to launch any reporting from Cornerstone 2010.

Cornerstone 2010 Schedule: Rebecca

Posted by rebecca On June - 22 - 2010

So, we are a week from leaving and I think I have finally nailed down my schedule for Cornerstone 2010. Here are few of the highlights that I’m going to see.

Monday: This is my only really slow day of the week, but as soon as camp is set up I’ll head out and see what new bands I can find. These are just the two I don’t want to miss!

Take It Back!10:30pm – Solace Stage: A post-hardcore band from Arkansas. This is a band you won’t want to miss. Although, if you can’t make it to this particular show they are playing a couple of more times during the week.

The Burial11:15pm – Raging Storm/Sancrosanct Stage: A deathcore band from South Bend, Indiana. If you are a fan of August Burns Red or Becoming the Archetype, then you’ll love The Burial.

Tuesday: And the craziness begins! For 12 hours  I will be running from stage to stage trying not to miss anything. A lot of the bands this day are going to be my first time seeing them live.

Fire from the Gods/Let the Dead - 12:00pm – Legacy Stage: Two bands from deep in the heart of Texas, Austin! These bands will show you what Texas hardcore is all about.

Hand Drawn Mountains1:40pm – Chasing Canadia Stage: This will be my first time to see this band live.

Switchfoot - 8:00pm – Main Stage: We all know Switchfoot. I’ve never had the opportunity to see them live, so here’s my chance.

The Ember Days - 9:00pm – Solace Stage: A progressive worship band from New Zealand. Another band I have never seen live.

The Showdown - 11:00pm – Encore Stage: Hardcore/Classic Rock from the backwoods of Tennessee. These guys put on a phenomenal show. If you are a fan of Maylene and the Sons of Disaster or Becoming the Archetype, then don’t miss this show!

Wednesday:  This will probably be my favorite day all week. All of my favorite bands play this day. I can’t Wait!

Bradley Hathaway3:30pm – Main Stage: A mix of spoken word and singing. Some of the most amazing stuff you’ll hear. He’s become kind of a staple at Cornerstone.

Levi the Poet - 4:30pm – Solace Stage: Spoken word with a mix of sporadic instruments. I have been waiting to see him play for quite some time now.

Listener6:00pm – Jesus Village: I’ve never seen him, but I’ve been listening to his stuff and I can’t wait! It’s going to be awesome!

mewithoutYou – 7:00pm – Main Stage: One of the most amazing bands ever! Another must see for Cornerstone.

Sleeping Giant - 10:50pm – Underground Stage: This band puts on one of the most moving, worship filled hardcore shows I have ever seen. If you go to this show you will be changed. You won’t be able to stop it! It cannot be  contained!

After a very long day, I get to end it with my favorite band:

The Chariot- 12:00pm – Encore Stage: Of course, I’ll have to leave Sleeping Giant early…but it will be worth every second. The Chariot always puts on an insane show. You never know what craziness they are going to bring to the stage

Thursday: This day is going to be an eclectic mix of music

John Reuben3:15pm – Main Stage: Just about the only chance for Hip-Hop at Cornerstone this year.

Brooke Waggoner4:15pm – Gallery Stage: I’ve never seen her live, but I’ve been listening to her for over a year now. It’s going to be amazing I just know it!

Hands7:30pm – Underground Stage: I have been waiting to see this band for a while now. Since they never come to Austin, I definitely will be at this show!

I’ll have to split my next hour to be able to see both bands:

The Almost8:30pm – Main Stage: One of my favorite bands.

The Farewell Drifters - 8:30pm – Gallery Stage: I love me some bluegrass, so I’m sure to catch at least part of this show

For Today- 10:50pm – Underground Stage: This show will be a lot like Sleeping Giant the night before. These guys are an amazing Hardcore band that puts on a show full of worship.

Friday: I’m hanging out at the Gallery Stage for most of this day.

The Glorious Unseen9:00am – Main Stage: This would be a great way to kick off the day. This band is made up of several youth leaders with a passion for music and a heart for God.

Timbre - 2:05pm – Gallery Stage: You’ve gotta’ see this harp playing girl!

Over the Rhine4:15pm – Gallery Stage: This Ohio duo plays awesome Americana music.

Dignan - 6:00pm – Gallery Stage: I haven’t seen this band live yet, but I look forward to hearing this progressive indie rock band

Paper Route - 7:15pm – Gallery Stage: An atmospheric rock band out of Nashville, Tennessee. If they are half as good live as their CD’s are, then this should be a real treat

Children 18:3- 9:00pm – Underground Stage: An awesome family punk band from Minnesota. These guys are the next big thing in Christian punk rock right now!

Eisley10:00pm – Gallery Stage: I have been listening to these guys since their beginning. It’s been a while and I am very excited to see them again.

White Collar Sideshow- 12:00am – Underground Stage: Here is another show that has an unbelievable power to change you. This is an amazing theatrical band that will move you. Besides, these are some of the coolest people you will see at Cornerstone.

Saturday: The last day and there is still so much to see!

The Glorious Unseen - 12:15am – Main Stage: I know this was on Friday too, but if 9:00 am was too early before than be sure and catch these guys at this show.

O’Brother6:00pm – Gallery Stage: I have never seen this band before, but everyone says I have too. I’m game!

August Burns Red7:00pm – Main Stage: This band rocked last time I saw them on Main Stage at Cornerstone. They never cease to amaze me.

Ivoryline8:35pm – Gallery Stage: A post-hardcore band from Tyler, Texas. I have seen these guys play so many times and they are always great!

Seabird- 10:00pm – Gallery Stage: An atmospheric rock band from Ohio. The perfect way to end Cornerstone 2010.

Cornerstone 2010-Chuck’s Schedule

Posted by chuck On June - 19 - 2010

Cornerstone 2010 offers a chance to explore the new and upcoming bands that may never make it to our local cities.  It also offers us the chance to see the birth of bands that go on to significant success.  I still have the self-released versions of Paper Route‘s demo (in a plain brown bag) and Anathallo‘s A Holiday At The Sea (packaged with a baggie of beach sand).  I remember seeing Eisley win the new band contest and stumbling upon Dignan tearing the house down with 50 people on the stage banging and singing.  I still regret ignoring Ian’s plea for me to come see this exciting new band that only had about 30 people at their show (mewithoutyou).

Last week we published the highlights of Ian’s Cornerstone 2010 schedule.  I will see some of the same acts that Ian discussed: Love Begotten, Flatfoot 56, So Long Forgotten, Levi the Poet, Listener, mewithoutyou and Seabird.  However there are several bands that I have never seen or heard of that I plan to see at Cornerstone 2010.

Check out my full Chuck’s Cornerstone 2010 schedule, find me (you can’t miss me, I will be wearing a photo vest and a white sun hat) and say hello.  We have buttons and stickers.  I would love to hear what you have to say about these bands.

Monday: Ian said this is typically a slow day but after driving in and setting up camp I have 9 bands on my schedule.  I have found a concentration of experimental, indie, jazz bands that will create wonderful, laid back start to Cornerstone 2010.

2x The Mono 4:15-Green Light Production Stage- This experimental/indie/electroacoustic trio whose music is just as wonderfully bizarre as the description sounds, begins my search for the experimental and off-beat at Cornerstone 2010.

Archabald 6:00-Impact Stage-  The music of this ambient pop band is a wonderful experimental mess that is mesmerizing.

The Unfortunate 9:15- Chelsea Cafe- This jazz/folk/soul trio features killer vocalist Ami Moss.  Their rich jazz arrangements and complex solo interactions should be a perfect soundtrack to our first Cornerstone 2010 sunset.

Tuesday: Cornerstone 2010 Day Zero will be a busy one with 15 acts on my schedule. Everyone from superstars Switchfoot to electronic warriors Sheltershed to acoustic guerrillas Hand Drawn Mountains there will be a wide swath of styles and crowd sizes.  Here are some that I am most excited about.

The Clutter 4:10-Chasing Canada Stage- A math rock/experimental act from Lafayette, Indiana is one of my top 5 new artists to see.  Thick driving rock music with complex instrumental arrangements and fuzzed-out looped vocals.  This is really a throw back to mid-60′s psychedelic rock.

Erich Seimens 6:00-Chelsea Cafe- I don’t care what this guy sounds like.  His myspace description as folk/hardcore/turntablism is worth 45 minutes I will dedicate to this fellow Texan.

Charla Rainey 7:00-Jesus Village- A strong neo-folk singer songwriter with beautiful love songs to God will lead me into Switchfoot and the evening.

Wednesday: See Ian’s Wednesday schedule and you will probably find me. The first full day of Cornerstone 2010 starts with So Long Forgotten and is a full out sprint all day and ends with my biggest conflict of the festival.  Do I go see Iona‘s first American show in a decade or do I see what I think will be a monumental Sleeping Giant/Men Walking As Trees Walking show?  A decision must be made.  In the meantime:

Campbell The Band 4:30- Impact Stage- We cannot find a bio for this modern rock band.  It will be one of my Cornerstone 2010 missions.  This band sounds like Radiohead meets MuteMath.

The Hollands! 6:00- Chelsea Cafe-Former Ballydowse guitarist Craig Holland and wife, Jana Holland craft a style of gypsy/folk/punk that has a constantly building, but never relenting tension that is hypnotizing.

Brian Beyke 8:20- Chasing Canada Stage- The Still Pioneers‘ guitarist builds songs live by looping his guitar, vocals and sound effects into swirling post-rock symphonies.

Thursday: Cornerstone 2010 is now in full gear with seminars, art festivals, sport tournaments and much music. My schedule includes everything from party hip hop to bluegrass to funk.

Manafest 1:15- Main Stage- This is a new act for me but I love his deeply spiritual lyrics and party beats.  Don’t laugh if you see me dancing.

Kate York 7:15- Gallery Stage- After a busy day running from stage to stage I settle in for a few hours at the Gallery Stage.  Kate York‘s smooth electro-pop will be a nice transition into the evening.

The Farewell Drifters 8:35- Gallery Stage- The relaxing phase of our day continues at the Gallery Stage continues with some sweet bluegrass gospel symphonies.  Join me and we can dance a jig.

Dave Richards (Red Saviour) 10:00-After Hours Dance Club- Looks like Thursday is the day of the dance.  Dave is the founder of tastyfresh.com. Bring your glow stix and worship with some thumping Christian worship.

Friday: The day you begin to realize that all of this wonderfulness will come to an end, but there is so much greatness there is no time to mourn. If you want to meet the One21music team come by the Gallery Stage becuase we will be there much of the evening.

Bill Tucker 3:00- Jesus Village- I am more excited to see Bill Tucker than anyone else I have found so far in my research. Seven cds of wildly varying experitmental, acoustic, noise, talk music.  I want to see this guy and I want to buy his cds.

The Gallery Stage 6:00 to midnight- Dignan, Paper Route, Eisley and Over The Rhine.  Probably the best collection of music at any one stage at Cornerstone 2010.  Indie rock from Texas (Dignan and Eisley) mixes with the electronic rock of Paper Route and the soaring jazz folk of Over The Rhine.

Children 18:3 9:00 -Underground Stage- We will wrench oursleves away from the Gallery Stage to feed wifey’s love of punk.

Saturday: As we fight fatique and melancholy we look forward to our last day at Cornerstone 2010. This is the day that you do all of those things that you have put off during the week.  You buy your last tshirts and some souvenirs.  You trade numbers with new friends and you make sure you see everything you wanted to see.  And you try to pack up some of your camp so you can get an early start in the morning.  But, there is so much good music left to see.

Sekajipo/Refugee Beat Poets Collective 2:00-Jesus Village- I cannot find any information about this artist, but with a name like this how can you miss this show?

Levi The Poet 4:30- Solace Stage & Listener 5:10- Underground Stage- Ian has raved about Levi and Listener so much how can I miss them?

Men Walking As Trees 6:00- Underground Stage- Just in case I miss the Sleeping Giant show I will hang around the Underground Stage to worship with this Dallas based world music worship band.

Seabird- 10:00- Gallery Stage- Trust me when I tell you there is no better way to end your Cornerstone 2010 experience than sitting under the stars listening to Aaron Morgan‘s booming, crystal clear vocals and the melodic rock of Seabird.

Sunday: Break camp at dawn (yawn, yawn) and 17 hours on the road back to Texas, musically satiated and spiritually filled.

Please, if you see us around please come say hello.  We will be handing out buttons and stickers and recording Cornerstone 2010 for our readers who cannot make it to the Farm.
