Jenny & Tyler are a husband-wife pop-folk band originally from Newark, Delaware, and currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. The group consists of singer-songwriters Jenny Somers and Tyler Somers. Their style is a fusion of folk, pop, funk, rock, soul, and bluegrass that has been called “soul-grass.
It all started back at the University of Delaware. Jenny met Tyler on a church bus then at the Delaware dining hall and then they began to lead worship together. Tyler was the music coordinator for the campus ministry and they started leading worship together and from there began writing songs and eating omelets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. They spent the first year singing together in the stairwells of the student center and then they started dating and well, as they say, the rest is history.
Tyler Somers grew up listening to jazz music and refined classical compositions while Jenny Somer's family listened to Ricky Skaggs and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. "I think that our differences are part of what make us a great team. Tyler pushes me to try new things and I keep him somewhat grounded. Our different musical backgrounds inspire us to create new music. If it weren't for Tyler, I'd probably be writing cheesy country songs and he'd be a virtual Jack Johnson impersonator", says Jenny.
In 2007, Jenny & Tyler released a record called A Prelude. They chose the title because they felt like the songs on the record were really just the beginning of what Jenny & Tyler were to become as a duo. "Admittedly, we didn't know what we were doing when we recorded A Prelude, but we somehow managed to produce a collection of songs that, despite their imperfections, communicated what was on our hearts at the time", says Jenny Sommers.
In 2008, Jenny & Tyler loaded up a U-Haul and moved to Nashville. "We didn't know what we were getting into, but did know that we wanted to pursue music a bit more seriously", says Jenny.
In 2009,Jenny & Tyler quit their day jobs and released This Isn't a Dream. That spring, Jenny & Tyler toured for the first time. It was frightening and exhilarating all at the same time and they couldn't believe that they were actually able to make a living doing something they loved so much. Jenny & Tyler traveled consistently for the next year, playing in houses, coffee shops, churches, colleges, and bars.
The summer of 2010, Jenny & Tyler gathered a group of songs and went into the studio (aka friends' closets, living rooms, and basements). The result was Faint Not.
"The album chronicles our journey of faith, from God's pursuit of us, to first believing, to the really high highs and the really low lows; it's an honest telling of our relationship with the Lord and with each other As writers, songs allow us to communicate experiences and truths when we can't find the words to speak them. Our hope is that the songs will resonate with you. We don't know what the future holds, but we're thankful for where we are today. We're thankful for you and your support of our music", says Jenny Somers.
In 2012 Jenny & Tyler released their newest full length album Open Your Doors.
