Red Letter Rock Fest 2009: Day Two Wrap-up

red-letter-rock-fest-09

Well, I started to write this post at about Midnight last night (Saturday), but I was watching my team fall asleep as they were editing the pictures from the fest so we decided to call it a night and get up in the morning to have this for you.

Day two of Red Letter Rock Fest 2009 was a full day of music. We had a lot more to do, and a lot of stuff to cover in a very short amount of time. Like I mentioned before, we had all access passes, so we were able to walk around where ever we liked, and it made the experience very rich. Everybody needs to understand that putting the festivals on is not easy work, there are hundreds of people that make it happen minute to minute. If you are reading this and you know Reid or Cody, give them a hug next time you see them, because they need it after this weekend..

Anyway, on to the music. The day started off with new comers Stars Go Dim. Well, I say new comers, but the band features members of both Pillar and rapcore band Justified. They don’t really recreate the sound of their former bands though, and instead go for the alternative/emotional sound captured by band like Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind. If you are into those bands, then you may really dig Stars Go Dim, and they seemed to get a pretty good response despite being brand new to the fest.

The White Collar Sideshow took the stage next, and oh man, I dont think anybody knew what to expect. The White Collar Sideshow isnt a band as much as a production, a show that is meant to express the visions of ring leader T Benten. They play saw blades, wear masks, and in general really push the boundaries of any audiences imagination. We did an interview with these guys, so Im not going to say much more about them (the pictures speak for themselves), but I do want to say that this crew are some of the nicest, coolest, most sold out for God people that I have met in a long time. You will be reading a lot about these guys in days to come.

Next up was Tooth & Nail pop/goth punks Children 18:3 These guys were awesome! These guys were one hundred percent the entire time they were on stage, they never stopped moving! Their music was fast and loud, but still very happy and carefree. The crowd loved them, and they made a new fan out of me.

Stage two lit up as the guitars rang out from Children 18:3, and revealed the festivals mystery performer, who ended up being hip-hop main man KJ-52. I love KJ, and I have been listening to him for a long time. The crowd really loved him, but I was a little frustrated that this extremely talent emcee didn’t seem to really play a song, but instead played beat after beat to get the crowd moving. Im not hatin’, just wanted to hear “The Hard Way”, call me sentimental.

KJ-52 at Red Letter Rock Fest 2009

Decyfer Down destroyed the speakers with their high octane hard rock for the next thirty minutes. I have never seen these guys before, but I understand why I hear about their show so often. Eve though this style of heavy music isn’t my cup of tea, I tip my hat to the band for knowing their audience, and keeping the energy high from moment one.

The show I was looking forward to the most was Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster, and they did not disappoint. Heavy, southern, and a whole lot of fun! One of the funnier moments was when virtually every member of the band would walk down into the crowd and just casually walk around, still playing their instrument. Their bassist was down on the floor for almost two songs!

Haste The Day brought the mosh, as they were the most hardcore band on the line-up. Their real talent lies in their ability to blend soaring ,melodies with brutal breakdowns, and that dichotomy was not lost on their live show. The down-to-the-floor back bends from one of their guitarists was defiantly a sight to see as well (luckily we got pictures right).

Next up was Superchick. They have been around for ever, and they worked the stage like pros. I haven’t seen these guys in about 6 years, and they haven’t lost a step. I was also surprised that this younger crowd seemed to know almost ever word of this band’s songs. But then again, that is the power of Superchick!

Hard rock band RED hit the stage like a freight train. They were flawless, the vocalist’s voice was out of this world. In all reality, this band has had the most cross over success out of all the bands on the show, and after seeing a few songs, I understand why they are able to hit the road with bands like Staind and Seether, and hold their own. RED will be around for a long time…

Red at Red Letter Rock Fest 2009

Red at Red Letter Rock Fest 2009

At the end of RED, we snuck out to do one of our interviews, which ran pretty long, so I am sad to say that we missed the majority of  The Glorious Unseen‘s progressive take on Praise & Worship. They blend a lot of more modern elements into their worship music, and it was really refreshing, even if it was just for a few minutes, to close my eyes and hear 800 kids sings praises at the top of their lungs.
Directly after, Kevin Kirkland spoke to the crowd and shared God’s word. Giving a nice break in the music, and reminding us why we were all there to begin with.

Fan favorite Hawk Nelson hit the stage around around 7:30 with their fun blend of pop-rock. Despite their size (they are kind of little dudes, and after seeing the six man team of Maylene, four guys just didnt seem to fill up the stage), Hawk Nelson had the crowd’s heart from note one. massive sing-alongs, big guitars, and lots of fun ensued. Good job guys.

Headliner Skillet wore their experience on their sleeves, and rolled in with pyrotechnics, hydrological lifts, and a amazing girl drummer. They mixed up the song list well, playing songs from virtually every record, along with a brand new song called “Monster”. Great light show, great stage performance, and Skillet left the crowd exhausted but happy.

If you are reading us for the first time because you either met us at the festival or took a sticker, you will agree that Red Letter Rock Fest was a lot of fun. As far as I am aware, nobody got hurt, and every performance was something that people will remeber all year. I say all because, of course, everybody read this should go to Red Letter Rock Fest next year. You wont regret it, in fact it may spoil you. All the other summer festivals may just not seem the same….

Red Letter Rock Fest: Day One Wrap-Up

red-letter-rock-fest-09

So we had a great day here in Snyder Texas, at Red Letter Rock Fest 2009. We saw some great bands, met some amazing people, and in general had a grand ol time. That’s right, I said ol, not “old”, because ol is how old people say “old.” Sorry about that, its been a long day.

First of all, Cody and a Reid have been really amazing to us. Let’s be honest, we arn’t a big website, so we are really lucky to have the access that we have had at this festival. We are all over backstage, in the green room, the photog pit, and have some really amazing one on one access with the bands. Thank you so much to Cody and Reed for treating us like big wigs, we really appreciate it.

Ok, so now to the festival. We got here about two hours before the doors opened. We watched Spoken and Audio Adrenaline sound check, talked to some cool people, and just in general hung out like homies.

First of all, the crowd is awesome.

Also, there is a this awesome dude who is painting the entire time the bands are playing. This piece was created during Audio Adrenaline.

Norma Jean started things off and proved why they are the kings of metalcore. They took over the crowd almost immediately, and really set the pace for the rest of the night. They always are able to put on a superior show, and tonight was no exception. Much later in the day we were able to chill with vocalist Cory and ask him a few questions. Stay tuned for that one, but until then..

On the second stage, Spoken lived up to their reputation as one the better Christian rock acts on the planet. A cool point of the show was when the band reached waaaay back and played “This Path” from one of their older albums from before they were on Tooth & Nail.  It was very fun to sing along with a song I heard back when I was in my teens still.

Audio Adrenaline Speaks took the stage next. If you haven’t seen this show, it is a stripped down AA set-up, in which the vocalist and bass player play a few songs, share testimonies, and tell the story of the Audio Adrenaline. Despite singer Mark’s lack of a voice, it was a fun little stroll down memory lane, and was a really cool time of getting to know AA like I had never been able to before.

Disciple brought their high-octane rock to the stage next. Man, those guys can put on a show, movement was constant, guitars were loud, and sings alongs were many.  One of the guitarists even did a no hands back flip with his guitar still strapped to his chest, landed, and kept playing like nothing had ever happened. You owe it to yourself to see these guys at least once, you wont be disappointed…

Last of the night was the world famous Family Force 5, and their over the top, rock dance extravaganza. I see why these guys are talked about so much, they put on quite a show. Lots of dancing, lots of wild acrobatics, and just all around fun. Dance rock at its finest for sure.

One21 Guide To Christian Music Festivals: August

So Summer time is is around the bend, and for music lovers that means one thing: Music Festivals! In the world of Christian music, summer festivals are a big deal, there are many artists who only play these once a year mega-events. For audience members, festivals are a great way to experience music that may have never come into focus until they saw it live. In our lives, mewithoutYou, La Dispute, Josh Garrels, Anathallo, Enter The Worship Circle, RedCloud, and Cool Hand Luke would never have hit our radar if we hadn’t wandered into a tent at Cornerstone Festival over the years. Even though we at One21 think Cornerstone is great, it is only one of the many around the country. Maybe you want to hit one, or tour them of all (we have met people who do), so we have put this little schedule together of all the Christian music festivals in 2009. You are welcome:

Kingdom Bound (August 2-5)
Park Resort, NY
King Bound Fest is the extension of a ministry that was started about 20 years ago in New York. Two men wanted to use Christian music to reach the community and the event has grown into a three day festival with the heavy hitters in the contemporary Christian music scene rocking the stage to about 50,000 people. The event is outside, camping, Rv, and hotel accommodations are all spelled out on the website. There are three stages, the main stage for the big acts, a Park stage for what looks like the heavier music, and a worship stage for…well..worship.

They are also running a talent search for a chance to play one of their main stages, so if you are a band reading this, hit up the website, and maybe you can …rock the desert..

New Song is a two day event that is more geared towards church groups and youth groups. There is a still a lot of music, mainly rock and worship, but also a ton or speakers and Bible studies. This would be a great end-of-the-summer trip for any youth group. There is camping available, two stages, and a lot to do.

Purple Door is one of the more celebrated fests among the underground crowd. It boosts a pretty diverse line-up, going back and forth between the indie rock, to hip-hop, and a lot in between. There are speakers, but not the ones you would expect at this sort of festival, along with art shows and much more. I wanna go..

Lifefest 2009 (July 8th-12th):
Oshcosh, WI
Lifefest is a true all-in-one experience. They have not only music, but art fairs, kid camp, skate parks, bonfires, tons of game, and interactive prayer journeys. Camping is the main way to experience the fest, but the website has a link to a nearby Radisson Hotel. The music is a good mix of styles, along with quite a few speakers and comedians. The fest seems to be more geared to towards families and large youth groups. There is really something for everyone, young and old, at this festival.

Sonshine Fesival (July15th-18th)

Sonshine is another outdoor, camp at the site festival, but cuts out all the fluff. None of this “other stuff to do” thing going, Sonshine is all about the music. Three days, and from the looks of it there are a few hundred acts performing on three stages (along with a kids stage, and a extreme sports tent). Most of the mainstream acts hit the main stage, but a whole lot of heavy music is going on the side stages, along with what looks like an entire day of hip-hop. Sonshine are looking pretty good with pleasing just about ANY music lover.

It claims to be the largest Christian music festival, with tons of music, activities and stuff for kids. Creation also features themed stages, with a main stage reserved for the bigger acts, the fringe stage for lesser known bands, and a stage completely reserved for worship. Soulfest (July 29th-Aug 1rst)
Gilford, NH
Soulfest is a huge outdoor festival that has a more of a focus on the worship aspect of the music scene. There are lots of rock bans, activities, and what not, but many of the bigger names are worship leaders. From what I can tell, there isn’t camping, so they provide a ton of local hotels on their website so you can be best served. The fest seems a little more lighthearted, although as I said before, it’s not ALL worship.

They are putting up a lot for just a few days of festivities. Camping and hotels are available, and this one seems to be very family friendly, no one should get bored. This our favorite by far. Cornerstone is run by the Jesus People, and is a huge undertaking: easily 8 stages (including a massive main stage and not including “generator stages”, stages built DIY style by people who are attending the fest), with over 300 performers, Cornerstone is THE place tto experience new music. With focuses on both the mainstream and independent underground, Cornerstone has something for every one. The fest is open for seven days, with only six being official festival days. The festival also features independent movie screenings, art displays, seminars, kids camp, and so much more. Man I love that festival.

That’s it for June, come back next week to see what July has in store..

eMusic Is The Coolest

One of the biggest surprises since we have started One21music is the lack of interest our readers have shown in eMusic.
Download 25 FREE songs at eMusic.com!
This was the first ad we put on our site. We thought people would flock to get 25 free songs. No one has explored the trial subscription, so I thought I would give you a testimonial from an excited subscriber. But first let me explain eMusic.

eMusic is the #1 site for independent music, with a library of over 4,500,000 MP3s.  eMusic sets itself apart from other well-known subscription music services (such as Napster and Rhapsody) because eMusic customers truly own the music they download.  The files available for download are in the MP3 format, making them fully compatible with all digital music players, and free from digital rights management software restrictions such as expiration dates, or copying or CD burning limitations. eMusic’s MP3′s play on any portable music player (including the iPod and Zune), can be downloaded to unlimited computers as well as burned to CD.

Here is how it works.  You can subscribe to download  25 to 100 songs each month based on the subscription level you buy.  The base subscription is 25 songs ($11.99 per month), then grows in 25 song increments (50 songs for $14.99, 75 songs for 19.99, 100 songs for $24.99).  eMusic offers about 25 different plans bu these are the most popular.

I have been a subscriber for over a year and my co-founder has been a subscriber for about nine months.  We love, l-o-v-e, eMusic.  Ian maintains a list of over 100 CDs and uses up his subscription on the first day it is available.  I like to save my downloads to use over the month.  Today is May 8th and I have already downloaded 65 of my 100 songs, so I am not such a good saver.

These downloads are just like buying the CD’s or downloading songs from iTunes, except they are cheaper and you own them.  If you really like music, or if your CD store is the electronics section at WalMart or if you are just cheap; eMusic is for you.  I downloaded , on their release date, the highly acclaimed new CD from Beirut for @$2.75, the EP from Bon Iver for $1.00 and M.Ward’snew one for $3.50.  Beat those prices WalMart and iTunes.

But more than convienence and thrift, eMusic has great services to help you find music you will love.  You can browse by genre, editors’ picks, new music, free tracks, advance releases, members ratings and any combination of those categories.  eMusic has music journalists writing artist and genre features and reviews.

Finally, eMusic has an extensive collection of songs and CDs from artists we have profiled on One21music. See the list below.

I encourage you to at least give eMusic a try.

To Write Love On Her Arms

to-write-love on her arms

If you hope to understand the movement and the fashion that is To Write Love On Her Arms, you must understand the story. For some this is a story about depression, addiction and recovery.  For some it is the story of the fastest growing charitable organization ever.  For some it is the story of a clothing brand that exploded into the marketplace.  For some it is the story of how the underground Christian music scene fueled a social phenomenon.  It is all of those things but it is none of those things.

This is the story of a girl who was finally willing to accept love and found life.  This is the story of a man who was willing to share Christ’s love, with five days of  his life, and was handed a mission.

Renee Yohe, a 19 year-old drug and alcohol addict and cutter, had rejected love to the point she had attempted suicide twice.  But in February 2006, Renee was convinced to accept the pleas of Jamie Tworkowski and his friends from church to enter rehab.  However, because of Renee’s drug tests and wounds she inflicted upon herself during the admittance process, the rehab center delayed her admission for five days until she detoxed.

Jamie and his friends knew this may be their last chance to help Renee and feared she might not live another five days, so they became her Church and lived with her during her five day detox and preparation for rehab.

Those five days, Renee’s willingness to be loved and Jamie’s willingness to stop his life for five days to serve like Christ has changed the world for thousands of people.

Jamie wrote the story, To Write Love on Her Arms, of the five days with Renee, set-up a MySpace page and printed some t-shirts to help pay for Renee’s rehab.  Christian music artists Switchfoot and Anberlin embraced the movement immediately and the explosion began. Three years later that MySpace page has more than 325,000 friends, there is a worldwide To Write Love On Her Arms week (September 10-17) and on February 13, 2008 more than 380,000 members dedicated themselves to writing “love” on their arms and sharing the message around the world.  The TWOHA “Hope Line” has fielded more the 2.7M calls from people seeking help with depression and addiction.  So hot is the brand that TWOHA tshirts became the top selling brand at Hot Topic within two weeks of its launch.

So what is this movement we call To Write Love On Her Arms?  It is best captured by the TWLOHA mySpace page:

To Write Love on Her Arms is a work in progress. This began with one broken girl, one painful night; addiction, depression, cutting. This is a glimpse at the five days that followed, a decision to love and to begin telling her true story. To Write Love on Her Arms is becoming something bigger, something hopeful. It’s the realization of what life can be when we commit to meeting a need. A friend of mine told me there’s no such thing as suicide prevention. This is an attempt to prove him wrong, to say that love can change a life. We can hold back the darkness. Rescue is possible. More soon to come. Join us as we continue to write this story, and as we begin to offer hope to the many hopeless who walk these dark roads. A Jimmy Eat World lyric has been stuck in my head today, “Believe your voice can mean something.”

TWLOHA has risen to prominence through endorsements of celebrities such as the members of Paramore, Jon Foreman from Switchfoot, Sean from the Blackout, Derek Sanders from Mayday Parade, Deon Rexroat from Anberlin, Amy Lee from Evanescence, Bryce Avary from The Rocket Summer, Casey Calvert from Hawthorne Heights, and Brendon Urie and Ryan Ross from Panic at the Disco and has a growing loyal fan base. Other supportive bands and musicians include A Skylit Drive, Between the TreesThe Almost, Underoath, Bayside, As We Collide, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and many more.

To Write Love On Her Arms has become a global phenomenon, but how is the girl who was the subject of all the attention in the first place?  Renee Yohe seems to be doing well.  Youtube has many vidoes of her, including one of her celebrating her third anniversary of sobriety.  Here she is in 2008 talking about her life and her book which tells the story from her side.

Jamie Tworkowski has become a global celebrity.  He continues to pursue his calling to spread love over depression and addiction.  Here are a couple of excerpts from an interview with Jamie::

“I think it all begins with the idea that our story matters -- regardless of influence or attention or any of that. Our story matters because we’re part of a bigger story. Our story matters because we’ve been created to love and be loved. I think we’ll each express it differently -- some will write books or blogs, some will write songs. Someone else will make a movie. I think the most important outlet, the one that applies to all of us, is community. We all need people we can do life with, people who will journey with us, people who can meet us in our questions.

As for a secret or advice for telling a story, I’ll go with this: Be honest. We all have our dreams and our fears and our questions. The tendency is to keep these things quiet because we don’t know what to do with them, or because we’re worried that other people will call us crazy. I say it matters. I say you might just find your greatest gifts in those scary places. I say it’s worth wrestling with because the world needs more people who have something to say, people who are interested in fixing things, people who are willing to dream… So be honest. It’s scary, but it’s good….

…As for what I want to say next, I don’t always go here because I don’t want to push people away. I think the language of it has been abused and misrepresented. But I’m in the middle of a difficult season, and the difficult seasons have a way of causing me to be honest. Maybe it’s that when things are hard, you don’t have the strength to fake it. Anyway, that’s the disclaimer. What I want to say is that, when it comes to the power of story, I suppose the best example in the history of the world would be Jesus. Jesus spent a lot of time telling stories. And perhaps God loved us so much that He sent Jesus to collide with our story, the story of humanity, the story that continues tonight -- me in an apartment in Florida typing these answers, and you wherever you are, reading these words on a similar bright screen. Perhaps we’re all in this together and perhaps we’re all more loved than we’ll ever know.”

Before you dive into the story that started it all, please embrace these essential lessons:

  • You were created to be loved.
  • No matter what abuse you have endured, you deserve to be loved.
  • No matter what you have done to yourself or others, you deserved to be loved.
  • Christ loves you so much, no matter who you are or what you have done.
  • As Believers we have received that unconditional love.
  • We must share that love by loving the “unlovables”.

Here is the story,  “To Write Love On Her Arms” (be careful, the story contains profanity), that started it all.

The Many Facets Of Christian Music

Ever since we started The One21, we have been learning a lot. From the vast amount of  new talent we come across, to the trends in music and entertainment we have been able to identify, this company has allowed us to learn new things daily about the world of music we love so much.  We have tried to share those trends with you, and explore what the digital age of music has done for the underground music movement. We have attempted to expand the knowledge of the music out there being made by believers.  We have tried endlessly on this site to change the perception of what most people think when they hear the term “Christian music”, and bring you a whole new world of music that exists outside of the mainstream Christian industry.

It is in that last idea that we have run into the most trouble.  We feel that this website and the database of music we are building is our calling, our ministry to you, the person reading this.  We feel that we have a responsibility to give you as much information about the artists we talk about so that you can make the most informed decision on what music you allow in to your life and those around you. On the other hand, we also feel that we have a responsibility to artists we talk about. We don’t want to force any artist to label themselves as something they don’t want to labeled as.  The choices that an artists make in their career are their own, and it be irresponsible for us to (forcefully) change those decisions ( we REALLY want Kate Minor to come back to music, and I REALLY want Damien Rice to become a believer).  So how do we talk to people about music that is made by believers without forcing those artists to be pigeon-holed into a scene they want to exist outside of.

This struggle was put center stage recently as we attended SXSW. A band that we have featured on this site (I’m not going to tell you who it is, don’t ask), had a very strong reaction to us wanting to interview them and talk about it on the site. They told Chuck “well we are Christians, but we defiantly don’t make Christian music”, and were still debating this issue when I walked past them ten minutes later. Some of the members seemed upset that since we were a site that covered Christian music, that talking to us would change the perception of their band in the general public. However, all the research we had done on the band not only revealed that they were believers, but the majority of their lyrics centered around the dark picture the church paints of Christ versus what He truly is. We felt a little awkward because in a way we had tried to make them something they didn’t want to be, which is their call, not ours. The outcome is that they didn’t talk to us, even when Chuck attended their show a few nights later.

Later that same week, Chuck presented our pastor with a signed copy of a CD, from one of the hip-hop artists we interviewed, for his ten year old son who is really into hip-hop at the moment.  Our pastor thanked Chuck, but said that he needed to listen to it before his son could have it.  That seemed strange to me for a moment, but then he explained that another Christian hip-hop artist had frequently used the word “hell” (in the correct context by the way), a word that shocked and offended his young children who had been told NOT to say that word. It occurred to me that a lot of people can’t just listen to ANY artist who says that they are a Christian, even with ideologies that match up, subject matter is still an issue.

So on one side, we have believers who are making music, but do not want to be part of the Christian music world, and on the other side, we have people who need help with finding the right artist that helps them live their faith.  On the one hand we know of a lot of Christian artist who hardly ever talk directly about their faith in their music, and on the other we have a responsibility to present music that lines up with the ideologies that exist in Christianity. The dichotomy bothered me all week until we met with Tre9, a Houston hip-hop artist and founder of DaSouth.com, who spoke in our interview with him about hip hop artists being relevant to the audience that they are trying to reach.

79975“You’ve got to know as an artist who you are going to target your message to. Obviously if you want to disciple Christians then you need to make music relevant to them. Which would be music: quoting scriptures, having heavy spiritual content; but if you want to reach people that don’t have church knowledge and maybe don’t even read their Bible then you need to bring it down to their level. So, that may require you to do music that shares your life story more often, and maybe closes with the fact that you found fulfillment in Christ, but you’re not so heavily focused on making sure you get a scripture in there. Throw a Jesus here; throw a God, a Holy Spirit there. Throw the word redemption. You know sanctification; these words that the world doesn’t understand. You want to make music that is relevant to where they are at mentally and even spiritually.

When I say relevant, you’ve got groups like P.O.D. who are way into the world, but are making relevant music to their audience, and look at them, they are global. They have penetrated a market that they couldn’t penetrate when they were labeled a Christian artist. I think that’s good. A lot of people think they are sell outs because they don’t preach the gospel in their music, but for me I feel that this world needs Godly principles, they need the Bible interpenetrated in today’s language so that it’s relevant. So, if P.O.D. makes a song about ‘I feel so alive’, but they don’t say it’s because of Jesus; I think that person will eventually become a follower of P.O.D.; listening to their music, going to their website, researching and finding out “Hey, these guys are Christians. So that’s what they mean by ‘I feel so alive’.” So they don’t have to put it into a song for me. Now, a lot of people would disagree with that but, we need wholesome music. We need songs that deal with drugs, and the dangers of drugs; songs that deal with abstinence. These songs don’t have to say anything about God.  God is in that, God wants people to live an abstinent life, God wants people to avoid drugs. So, I’m ok with making music that is relevant to that market or that particular group of people. Going into public schools we can’t do Christian music, especially during school hours. You can’t just go in there preaching about Jesus. So, if you are going to make music relevant to a school; if it’s an elementary school, then you need to write some stuff elementary level. Junior high, High school…so that’s what I mean by relevant.”

I was blown away. This was a concept that had always been in the back of my mind, but I had never heard put into words.  I also realized that this line of thinking could be applied to all music, not just the world of hip-hop.  As I thought about it more, I became aware that this was how the whole scope of the Christian music scene fit together, even the artists that wanted to exists outside the borders of what is traditionally thought of as Christian music.  This is how we can talk about really good music that is being made by believers, but not really overtly spiritually, and then turn around and talk about worship music in the same breathe.  It is because in “Christian music” there are different forms of it, but all of them are written from a world-view of Christ.

In the end, I propose that all music, written from a foundation of hope and faith, that God can use to touch people’s hearts, can be divided into three categories:

The Spiritual- this is music that is made by believers, and is mainly intended for believers.  This music uses language and subjects that believers understand, and is made mainly for the purpose of worship, education, and encouragement. This music will use a lot of direct Biblical scripture, or discuss the literal concepts within the Bible. The gospel message is OBVIOUS to anyone. This music is meant to celebrate and discuss God and His teachings. This is were the majority of worship music will exist, as well as artist who talk about heavy Biblical truths.
Examples:
The Ambassador
Becoming The Archetype
Third Day
Derek Webb
Jason Upton
Shane and Shane
Enter The Worship Circle
Toby Mac
For Today
Dirt

The Message- the music in this category is evangelical in nature. It is made by believers for everyone. While it deals with strong Biblical truths, the music is made to appeal to both believers and non-believers alike.  The messages are meant to talk about address the need for Christ and the struggles that people go through before the come to know Him, and the relationship that exists afterward. Sometimes the message is obvious, sometimes it isn’t.  Most artists talk about their faith not only through their lyrics, but also from the stages that they play from (be it a church or a bar stage). This category is a musical response to the great commission.
Examples:
Switchfoot
Lecrae
August Burns Red
P.O.D.
SuperChick
Kaboose
A Plea For Purging
mewithoutYou
Project 86
Joy Whitlock

The Light- this is the category that collects all the Christians who are out their making music, but are not necessarily talking about anything that is directly Biblical. This is just music made by believers. Most of the time, the songs have a indirect message pertaining to the artists faith. The artists in this category are not trying to speak to their beliefs, but are simply trying to make music , and their faith shines through from time to time.  The artists in this category most times exist completely outside of the Christian music radar, some of them you will know, but most you have never heard of. What is important to note is that while the music in this category is not overtly faith-based, it is music that is written from a heart changed by Christ, and can be used as a catalyst  people’s life.
Examples:
Rootbeer
Anathallo
Brooke Waggoner
Paramore
Bob Dylan
Cold War Kids
Thrice
Danielson
Bodies Of Water
Buddy Miller

On our site, we are going to begin using these categories to define our artists better. You will begin to see them on our “Christian Artists To Know”, and as we build our database of artists, the categories will also be incorporated.

The idea behind these categories to allow all the many ways that music is made by believers to be viewed as a unified music scene. For the artists that sing honestly about thier life  and for the worship leader in the church, God uses all this music to touch people’s hearts.

Hope In These Troubled Financial Times: Part 4

Uncertainty prevails.  Many of us have lost much of our retirement.  Many of us are unsure of our jobs. The war rages on.  The government is putting our country into crushing debt, with deficit spending.  Countries are calling for the creation of a global currency to replace the dollar.  Our future is dark.

Darkness is the illusion.  When we look at the world we are looking at the illusion.  We have convinced ourselves that the world is light and the spirit cannot be seen. The Apostle John disagrees in his Gospel (1:4,5). “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

We are still living in the curse and the world is hard.  We can be living in Christ’s light where we would not worry about “what we shall eat and what we shall wear”.  Which takes us back to where we started.

The journey I have laid out for you is the journey out of this world into the light of Christ’s promises:

In Part One, I shared with you Christ’s command, from Matthew 6:25-34, to not worry about the troubles of this world (”what we shall eat and what we shall wear”) but to seek first His Kingdom.  That is achingly simple yet seemingly impossible.

In Part Two, I discussed how the curse God placed on us through Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:14-19) focuses our attention on worldly matters and distracts us from His Kingdom.

In Part Three, I claimed that too many us Believers live our lives as slaves to the curse of Man because we overlook Jesus’s triumph over the curse in Luke 4: 1-14.

Virtually all of us live our lives fighting the Curse.  We are thrilled to accept grace, salvation and redemption as the promises of God. But we miss some of the true promises of Jesus: to discover Him, to walk with Him, to build a relationship with Him, to spend our life on Earth seeing the world though his eyes.  Instead, we spend our lives struggling for safety, security and love.

Why?  Because look outward through our eyes, rather than inward to the Holy Spirit.  Christ sent the Holy
Spirit to be with us until His return.  The Holy Spirit enters our soul when we accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour and dwells within us for our days on this earth.  It is the Holy Spirit within us that shines light on the spiritual world and enables us to transcend the difficulties and uncertainty of the physical world.

In order for us to overcome the pull of the physical world we see with our eyes and to experience the peace of the spiritual world we must embark on a journey.  We are called to a pilgrimage to the light of the world.  Ours is not to a place, but to within, where we can gaze upon the light of the world and see the true beauty of creation.  Our pilgrimage is never ending but redemptive. Our pilgrimage is not made up of steps but of disciplines.

To see the “light of men’ (John 1:5) you must first “seek His Kingdom” (Matthew 6:33).  Seeking is an active verb and you and I must actively search out the Holy Spirit within us.  Many authors have provided great guidance on the disciplines involved in this seeking pilgrimage we are called to.  One of the most highly respected of the modern works on the disciplines of the pilgrimage is Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster.  In the book he discusses 13 inward, outward and corporate disciplines.

Until the books arrive from Amazon, I suggest that you immediately begin practicing these five:

  1. Prayer- set aside an amount of time each day to pray in a quiet place.  Pray for God’s will, pray for healing, pray for insight, pray for others, pray for yourself and listen.  Then pray throughout your day.  Pray thankfully about good things that happen during the day, pray for peace during period of times of stress, pray for those sitting with you in the boring meetings.
  2. Study- set aside time each day to study God’s word.  Set aside time each week to discuss God’s word with other believers.  Remember that all of your disciplines are steps to a redemptive relationship with Christ so don’t think of this a school work.  Spend time in the Word not to determine propositional truth.  That is folly.  Study God’s Word quietly, seeking his guidance for you.  Hear Him speak to you through his words.  The Bible is not so much the world’s answer book, but the map of your pilgrimage.
  3. Submission- Now we hit a hard one.  This means giving up yourself to Him.  Step one is to submit to the first two activities described above.  Through prayer and study God will reveal other areas of your life, at first small and then more and more, that you must give over to Him.  Remember Matthew 6?  The whole “do not worry but first seek His Kingdom”.  That is this.
  4. Service- Reach out to others.  Start with those closest to you.  Serve them.  Do something for them that they will know is just for them.  Don’t expect them to return the favor.  It will feel good.  Then do something small for an acquaintance or even a stranger.  Eventually you will desire to commit time to serving strangers and when you do, you will see the face of God.
  5. Worship (in a Corporate setting)- Revelation 5:13 paints a beautiful picture of worship as seen from heaven: “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, all that is in them, singing…”  Visit a Church or a conference with really cool worship and let yourself go.

The trick is to not let the disciplines become discipline.  Keep your head up a smile.  Don’t think of these as tasks to complete.  Enjoy the pilgrimage. You will find that as you use these activities to “seek first His Kingdom” the dread and worry of the world will fade away, regardless of the stock market. You will see all of this is just the illusion.

This is the end of this series.  I don’t know when we will post another series like this.  I hope you remember this:

We were once subject to God’s curse on Man, but today we are only fooled by the curse.  Christ created a path for us to follow on our pilgrimage that enables us to look beyond the horrors of this world to the beauty of the spiritual world all around us.  In order to see that path and stay on that path for our pilgrimage, we must first seek His Kingdom and the best way I know how to seek is to utilize the spiritual disciplines.

My hope for you is peace, so do not worry about what you shall eat or what you shall wear.  Just simply take the first step on your pilgrimage, pilgrim.
