An ancient form of music handed down through an oral tradition to depict a way of life of a particular culture.  In the 20th century the folk tradition was stretched to include protest music of the masses and now includes many lyrical themes performed using traditional fold instruments.  Folk music instrumentation consists primarily of acoustic stringed instruments such as the guitar, fiddle, mandolin; wind instruments that can be handcrafted such as the pennywhistle and hand drums such as the djembe. Folk includes elements of old world, Celtic, and grassroots music.  Songs are free form, usually open to experimentation and progression. Artists range from solo artists to large group bands. Folk has a strong vocal presence, and also creates strong lyrical narratives.
