Relatively young genre that originated in urban America. Although it borrows heavy elements of soul, jazz, blues, funk and poetry, the majority of  Hip-Hop is mainly electronically produced.  The genre is heavily rhythmic. The music is mostly composed of two elements, the beats (music) created by a producer or DJ, and the vocal element also known as emceeing.  In most cases the emcee, or rapper, rhymes in lieu of singing, which is one of the main elements that separates it from other genres such as Pop and Rock.  Solo artists are typical, but large hip-hop groups are also numerous.
