John P. Kee was born 15 th out of 16 children and was raised in Durham, NC.  At home in Durham, music and attending church highlighted family's weekly activities. John P. Kee exhibited extraordinary talent at an early age, both vocally and instrumentally. An excellent student, John was placed a special school for the musically gifted children, and he started his musical career at the age of 14.

John P. Keemoved to Northern California where he studied with brothers Al and Wayne at the Yuba College Conservatory School Music in Marysville and became involved with the area's top musicians where his music skills flourished. While living in California John P. Kee had a chance to meet and play with numerous some of jazz greats such as Donald Byrd & the Blackbirds and Cameo. John P. Kee' s formative college years were turbulent after he was lured into using and selling cocaine regularly; Kee even operated his drug racket out of a church at one time. It was only after he witnessed the slaying of a close friend in a drug deal that he turned wholeheartedly to religion and gospel music for solace and inspiration. In the mid 1980s John P. Kee started a community choir in Charlotte. This choir, which eventually grew to become the New Life Community Choir, achieved rapid success.

Albums titled Wash Me, and We Walk by Faith carried him into the late 80's with a bang. John P. Kee infiltrated the secular rhythm and blues industry in 1994 with his eleventh album, gold award winning Show Up!, by combining church choir harmonies with hip-hop sounds. John P. Kee has often been compared to gospel music legend the Reverend James Cleveland, and the sheer power of Kee's voice is reminiscent of Shirley Ceaser and Edwin Hawkins.

The '90s brought the beginning of what would be a flood of awards John P. Kee including more than a dozen Stellar Awards, 20 GMWA Excellence Awards, a Soul Train Award, and two Billboard Music Awards. In 1995, John P. Kee and New Life Community Choir reached their first commercial peak with the gold award-winning album Show Up which was also nominated for a Grammy, as was his 1999 album Strength.

John P. Kee has been active for more than 20 years in the music field. He is primarily known for mixing traditional gospel with modern contemporary gospel and for having a soulful husky voice.

In 2007 John P. Kee was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame.
